UIUC Dorms!!!

Hi. I am clueless to which dorm i should apply. I narrowed it down to Bromley Hall and Illini Tower. Any suggestions?? Please explain.

I wouldn’t do either unless you want to go Greek. I know that Illini is better in terms of food. It’s known for being sort of preppy methinks. I also know that Bromley has maid service and a pool. Plus it’s close to the main quad. Rooms are among the biggest on campus. Also (I think) both have bathrooms for each room.

i live at bromley, and i have a bunch of friends in it.

the main difference is price. IT has done a lot of renovations and updating, and they are always a bit more expensive than bromley. but you get different things for your money.

rooms at IT include a bedroom that you share with a roommate, but you also have a lounge area that you share with two suitemates. in that area there’s a full kitchen, couches and a space for TV. there’s also a bathroom that the four of you share. it’s much more like an apartment than a dorm in terms of layout.

rooms in bromley are more like traditional dorm rooms in that your beds, tvs and everything are all in one room. except the rooms are noticeably bigger than university housing. you also have a bathroom that connects to another dorm room, so you generally share it with three other people.

food is probably better at IT, but in the end they’re both cafeterias and you’ll get sick of it after a while. bromley food isnt necessarily worse, but i feel like IT has better alternative options.

vannah is right, lots of people going greek in both dorms. that doesnt mean you’re screwed if you dont join a house, though. its all about just making friends and finding a place.

search this forum for existing threads about dorms. there has been tons of commentary on the subject.

I am also considering Illini Tower. My major is computer science and people say that I will practically be living in the Siebel Center. Will the distance between IT and Siebel Center be a problem? Also how expensive is the IT compared to university housing?

IT is one of the most expensive dorms on campus. Very nice accomodations.

I doubt as a freshman you will be living at siebel center as much as you think. if you’re concerned about proximity to the engineering quad, you should try to live at illinois street residence (ISR) as it is closest to the engineering quad. however, it is university housing, and living there is way different than living at IT. but plenty of freshmen engineers live in all different dorms. getting to the engineering quad is usually a pain either way.
