UIUC - EA applicants Class of 2025

Would love to know why Kelley better than Gies?

Couple of reasons most of business programs you want to end up doing MBA and Kelly has full time MBA , Gies has no full time mba

Kelly is full time top rated financial and accounting programs as most of business kids want jobs for high paying jobs

Kelly is highly ranked compared to Geis

Kelley is not more highly ranked than Gies, they are virtually identical in poets and quants rankings (based on admissions criteria, academic experience, and employment outcomes being weighted 1/3 each). Having a Full time MBA program or not has nothing to do with how many would rank undergrad business schools. Of the M7 MBA programs, only one has an undergrad business school…Wharton/UPenn. At least NJcollege2021 gave me a reason to laugh.

Kelley (yes, spelled with two e’s) is a great program and perhaps ten years ago the view that Kelley is stronger than UIUC for business would have been accurate - except the part on accounting as UIUC has had one of the preeminent accounting programs in the world for a long time. My S is fortunate to be direct admit at Gies, UW Madison and Kelley. He is having a difficult time deciding between them - especially since he cant spend quality time on these campuses. They are all ranked similarly but have different strengths/weaknesses. I dont mean to hijack the forum but I would love to hear from other students and parents in similar situations and how they are trying to decide.

I would start with the lowest price, because I agree all three schools are comparable. If they are all affordable (not including excess loans), then choose based on majors and their required classes, gen eds, outcomes by major, school vibe, location, and any other factors important to the student/family who are making the decision.

Yes people do, my son chose NU LAS over UIUC BioE for pre-med track 3 years back.
Reason, GPA requirements for pre-med track. It is difficult to manage 3.8+ GPA with engineering vs LAS.
I would ask adviser the GPA history for BioE class to get some sense.
At the same time BioE/M provides a plan-B, should student change mind for medicine career. So its boils down to what is student comfort zone.

I agree that BioE (and Biomedical E) can be tough on the GPA, which along with the MCAT are the primary determinants of med school admission. Med schools don’t give consideration for lower GPAs in more difficult majors, so…one must do their due diligence when making these decisions.

For CS,I saw LAS also has it. What is the difference between this CS and that one in Gainger? Also is it hard to double major?

Kelley is phenomenal for Business and kids love it, and if in the Honors program than that’s probably a no brainer. If you want Accounting then yeah, UIUC is the front runner there. UW at least in the midwest is not considered on par with either UIUC or Kelley and a lot of people around here shake their heads at any kids that chooses UW over either of the other two for business. It’s usually only for social reason or they don’t get into Geis or don’t want to go to UIUC since it’s our state school. Kids at Kelley don’t have trouble finding jobs or internships. My kids friends there all have them. UW is a compact campus but on the lake and pretty. Not far from Milwaukee. UIUC and Madison are about 2-1/2 hours from Chicago, Bloomington about 4. Your son should really try to talk to current business students at each and what area he is interested in. A lot of it is what you make of it. I have a kid in a business program elsewhere and her program is known well enough that she had no problem getting an internship back here in Chicago. Others are not as fortunate. She was asked very specific questions about her classes and what they were doing in them. Your son may want to ask who is teaching the classes - professors or TA’s, how the career planning is, internship placement, etc. And try to get in some visits as that can usually sell the school. If cost is a factor you may need to consider that as well.

It’s a full double major so it can be challenging as you need to meet the major requirements for both. The CS+ you are part of the LAS school and need to meet their requirements, such as the extra foreign language courses etc. But if you are more interested in humanities, then that’s also the way to go. It’s really a personal choice for some.

Cool. Thank you!!

Thank you!

They still earn the double major, whether they want to call it that or not.

It is misleading. What you are suggesting that CS+X programs are getting more degree than CS engineering major. That is factually incorrect.

No, that’s not what I’m saying, although now that you say that, when they say CS+ they do seem to imply that.

CS + is just CS + xxx where X is another major. So if you pick CS+ECON you are filling the degree requirements for both CS and Econ with 1 or 2 class differences. Period. And it is housed under the LAS.

No one in the real world really cares if you have a CS degree in Liberal Arts or in Engineering. In this case they would have the major course requirements for CS and the major course requirements for Econ, plus the GenEd requirements.

Here’s an example of the CS + Econ requirements for someone that may be interested in seeing where it states “major requirements”

https://economics.illinois.edu/academics/undergraduate-program/majors-minor/cs-econ/cs-econ-requirement-worksheet

CS requirements are subset of CS engineering.
CS Engineering takes whole lot of extra courses that CS+X major will find hard to accomplish in same amount of time or even won’t be offered.
Agree on the possibility that CS+x can do the job of CS Eng. But not every job, if CS+X hasn’t done a single AI/ML class, they won’t find a single job in that field unless they self taught.

speaking of CS options as UIUC, following talks extensively about CS+X admission, core differences, jobs perspective etc…

I’d like to know this as well. Within the CoE, is it possible to switch the major you applied to or are you pretty much locked in?
