UIUC - EA applicants Class of 2025

Well whatever the result is, this is why they have insurance and sadly this kind of stuff happens all over at colleges in some fashion or another no matter where someone in. Colleges can’t just sweep things under the rug, but many do which is not right.

Don’t expect a drop in enrollment for international students that the insurance policy covers. Certain that insurance company covers its bases too.

Totally agree. My husband used to do a lot of work with EB-5 Visas and if the clients ever heard of one single crime incident happening at a particular college it freaked them out. We kind of laughed because there is crime everywhere sadly. That’s just life. As you know, living in Chicago, Northwestern has crime in and around Evanston, U-Chicago has crime, Loyola is not in the best area, UIC, etc. UT where my daughter is had cases where students are raped, a few years ago some were murdered, Cornell had an incident last year where a student was found dead in a gorge not by suicide but after leaving a party of heavy drinking but he didn’t jump in, etc and it remains a mystery - cell phone never found, footprint on his shirt, etc. it was all over the national news. No one should be naive to think there isn’t crime on college campuses. It’s unfortunate, but we need to teach our students both sons and daughters how to be safe and take care of themselves. I gave my daughters both mace and an annoying buzzer thingy but it worries me knowing that I don’t think they carrry it. I remind them constantly never to take a drink from anyone and always to go get their own drink, whether it’s water or something else, always leave with a buddy, etc.

When someone doesn’t want to come to a school, there’s just one more willing to take their place.

Don’t expect to change tuition because of that lawsuit.
Any sexual harassment has no place in society.

Totally agree, precautions, self awareness one can use best for own safety.
Problem is predators take advantage of vulnerable kids.

I was scratching my head that it does sound familiar, guess too much from second round loss today.

Omg, our pools and our schools are all shot to hell. Brutal. Texas took me down in one last night, Illinois in another today.

If my kid were treated in a college like that, the predator would not be simply fired. More would happen to him!

Fully understand the point as a parent. What we can do is to help our own kids to prepare themselves better to handle certain situations and mitigate unexpected risks. There are all kinds of challenges as they turn into young adults.

One can always find out about Campus Safety and Security before enrolling to any college.

Hey folks, can someone please refer me to any site or social media page that can be used to connect with other admitted UIUC students to find roommates, make acquaintances etc.? Thx !

UIUC Reddit is very active. You may get a better answer if you post your question there.

They say they’re the official group, but as an FYI they are not so just be careful not to post anything personal for them to use or pics and go offline for that info or in pm. This group creates fb groups for every college and claims they’re official but they are really just full of marketing bs stuff, selling t-shirts, flags, nonsense. We called them out on our parent page a few years ago for one of my kid’s schools and then went and formed our own official page. When any parent called them out they quickly booted them from the group, it was pretty funny. They also were letting students into the parent group and as we noticed randos not affiliated with the university which is when we got suspicious. So again, just be careful!! But there are over 3k students in there so maybe you can find out if there is an actual real official group by joining. Many run of the mill avg college student is not on reddit so I wouldn’t bother. You may also want to try instagram. My kids found roommates there I believe and not fb.

Is there a group for parents?

How to choose between UIUC Engineering and Purdue Engineering for an OOS student who has admission offers from both (let’s say no scholarship and honors from both). What would be pros and cons of UIUC vs Purdue? Specifically looking for suggestions for Computer Engineering major. Purdue does cost $8.5K/year lesser than UIUC and so cost can be a factor; what other factors might make UIUC better choice than Purdue (OR) vice versa?

So an interesting twist, although probably not enough to change my son’s mind into considering but he was just notified last night that he is also admitted into the James Scholars Honors program. The catch is that he is W/L for CS (which is a list no one ever gets off and into) so they stuck him in the Pre-Engineering program (PREP) instead in DGS. If he accepted his offer the James Scholar program would transfer with him to Engineering if he ultimately transferred.

So I know the basic benefits of James Scholar - smaller classes, advising, and priority registration after the first semester but does anyone have familiarity with it for someone in this situation? I told him now he probably has to go to one of the virtual events but I’m curious to hear from someone with real experience as opposed to someone trying to “sell” the school/program.

Of course, it is a pisser to know that you’re one of the top students accepted into the University as they say in their letter, but they don’t take you into what you really want!! He also already had direct admit CS acceptances which is why he really has no interest in PREP.
