Thank you! Thankfully I am instate for UIUC and eligible for free tuition in addition to paying almost nothing at NU due to my low EFC
than its no-brainer, City of Chicago provides lots of architectural opportunities those are hard to find in rural area of UIUC.
Just make sure if you get into NU off the waitlist that you would still get all that financial aid. There are a lot of schools that pass out all their financial aid to admitted students early and by the waitlist round there isn’t enough left.
@PPofEngrDr Yeah he’s in at Purdue not waitlisted, so he’s declining that. UIUC he’s holding until the end but won’t go to Prep. Michigan’s CS program is only a few slots behind Illinois so being guaranteed in the program outweighs having to do the PREP but there’s no harm staying on the waitlist for now. He’s also on the waitlist for NU, GT, NEU (which he will prob drop) and UNC (also now will prob drop), but deciding now if UVA or UM is a better option for him.
Thank You
@Orsouthought @PPofEngrDr Thanks for your insights and inputs. Very helpful. Interestingly, my son has been “priority” waitlisted by CMU today…With Georgia Tech and UT Austin rejecting him, CMU waitlist is actually a surprise…perhaps Georgia Tech/UT Austin were more ‘mechanistic’ while CMU is more ‘holistic’ in their admission process? For, if CMU went by GPA & test score, his application would have been eliminated in the first round! Seems like a rollercoaster ride!
Nice, CMU is awesome! I loved it when we visited with my older son. However, if you need $ they are not great about it. Look through old threads here about them specifically. UT is very holistic. For them the essays are hugely important, much more so than test scores and grades, which is why no one understands why their kids with the top grades and scores get rejected. But it comes down to the numerous essays that have to be written and UT really looks at those seriously. GT I think is not as holistic on the other hand. Afterall, they don’t even require the common app essay be submitted.
@srparent15 Thanks. Being on the priority WL of CMU is like a badge of appreciation for my son - he doesn’t think he has any realistic chance of getting accepted from WL. I have heard the same (importance of essays) about UT. However, I feel this year the number of OOS applicants (nearly 30K) was too high for them to go holistic and I wouldn’t be surprised if they used GPA/Test Score as a filter to eliminate candidates before even applying holistic on the survivors! What leads me to this conjecture is that my son applied RD for UT on Dec 1st and he was expecting decision end of Feb/March 1st (as stated on the UT website). He however got his rejection decision on Feb 1st, which is the date when EA applicants got their decision! Had they gone holistic, he should have gotten his decision end of Feb.
Could have also just been the program he applied to was full by then. Which is a possibility especially if it was CS or ECE.
That’s a possibility since OOS students get only about 6% of seats (max 10%) in every major - he applied for ECE; does that mean ALL seats in ECE (for OOS students) could have been already taken by EA applicants?
Not all majors have to follow the same rules for the 90% state of Texas admit rate. I know my daughter’s program doesn’t so that means other less competitive majors have more than 90% Texas residents while others have less than 90%, like my daughter’s.
Engineering/CS majors at UT can sometimes accommodate up to a maximum of 15% OOS - not more, mostly less
My daughter’s program is more like 80% in state. Here is some info that tells you which programs don’t need to be 90% in state.
What is the game with waitlist for CS? Just curious…does waitlist filter people out? Does this mean seats go to OOS over instate? Just seeking clarification.
I am in the same boat, waitlist.
@coverstreet55 and @karven2020 From what my son heard no one basically gets off the CS waitlist, but it could be completely different this year of course, because he’s going off the information from when they had two acceptance periods (a true EA and true RD) and had a better idea of their numbers so I would hold tight.
Also, no idea if more seats go to in state or OOS. If I had to guess, honestly I would say OOS because they desperately need the $, but they aren’t supposed to take that into account.
Thanks for the info. Appreciate your prompt response.
Did anyone get an email asking to confirm if you’re still interested in staying on the waitlist? I got one yesterday, and haven’t really seen anything about it on any websites… Does it mean anything? Applied for CS btw (Grainger College of Engineering)
Same here, applied to CS. I also got that email and assuming that it means nothing.
One thing to consider is what kind of structural engineering you are interested in. If you are interested in structure related to buildings (as opposed to infrastructure), UIUC’s School of Architecture has an excellent structures program that several of my friends went through. The major Chicago structural firms (as well as other firms nationally) all typically recruit from this program.

Just think schools are going to start getting pushy about their waitlists. Northwestern waitlisted and then once you accept they tell you basically they know you have more decisions coming and will have you recommit to the waitlist after April 15 and will have you fill out a form then.
Also my guess is with financial aid now out people know if the school if affordable or not if they were put into a different major.
