UIUC - EA applicants Class of 2025

actually its 21k more for us for UIUC assuming 35k for instate UCSB inc room & board

yeah UIUC no merit (21k more than instate!) , just for fun, at what ROI , would you consider a school worth committing?

Tuition & Fees Room & Board Total

UCSB $14,391 $15,389 $29,780
UIUC OOS $34,312 $12,252 $46,564

The total doesn’t include Books & other misc. expenses. They should be about the same anywhere. Of course, going to UIUC will have higher transportation expenses! With that, you are probably right that it is close to $20K more.

However, UIUC ranks top 5 in Comp Sci while UCSB is only 36. I know a lot of kids going to Oregon which is not even better than UC Riverside, just to be out-of-state!

That actually is not true about online math classes pre-Covid. All classes were in person. For the fall at Georgia Tech initially some math classes were listed as online, with in person studios. It seems like that was just because classrooms had not been assigned. Every upper level math class I checked now is in a classroom and not online.

Actually, that is not true about GeorgiaTech math. Prior to Covid there were no online classes for undergraduates at all. They do have a very large online computer science graduate program.

This fall it appears that all classes will be in person, including math classes. Initially they were put in the system without a classroom assignment which made them remote. However I just checked and everyone I looked at is in person in a classroom

Options you have, UIUC makes perfect sense unless you are borrowing 200K.

That’s better news for incoming freshman.

how is uiuc for visual arts or urban planning? im thinking about a double major in advertising and one in the art/design field

We also had hard time in making decision.

My D got accepted to UIUC, UW(in state), UCSD and UCLA with major of CS. I like UW because the tuition is cheaper and there are many high tech companies, but my D doesn’t want to stay close to home. With the benefits of CHP, UIUC is attractive. I am not sure if it is worth paying extra.

UW is so hard to get into for OOS taking almost no one. Your D should really consider that because it’s a program kids would love to go to but can’t get in. UIUC is really expensive for OOS so if $ is a consideration I would think about that.

I get where you’re coming from as my daughter did the same thing and chose a different school for CS that is much more expensive than UIUC because she refused to stay in state. It has worked out well for her. Both my daughters actually refused to stay and go to UIUC for CS and as happy as can be. So, if you can afford it, then the programs are comparable enough to consider. If you can’t afford it, then the choice is pretty clear.

What is COA difference between UW and UIUC?
How do you plan to finance it?

It seems that my D is not alone :grinning:

COA difference is 24k/year.

NO FA from either school. It’s difficult to make decision because UW CS is also a good program.

If you are taking loans and not paying from pocket, won’t recommend to take 100K loan for tenure.
But if you can afford to pay from pocket, your D wishes are hard to ignore, ultimately you go college for once and UIUC provides best diversity experience.

My D just committed to UIUC Comp Sci over in-state UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Cruz. She also considered UC San Diego undeclared and UW pre-science. We really love the UCSD and UW campus. However, it is not worth the risk considering the low chance of switching to Comp Sci. It will cost about $20K more each year.

Use your Bay area connections to get her an internship and 2 summer internship that extra cost would be recouped.
