GPA Scale: A in a regular class: 4.0 ; Honors: 4.75 ; AP : 5.0
Unweighted/ Weighted GPA: 3.5 / 4.2
Class rank: not given (probably top 15%) in the over 1100 kids in my graduating class
ACT: 32 composite with a superscore of 33. (I plan to increase this to a 33-34 in September)
APs: I have taken 6 AP courses and have gotten mostly 4's and 5's. I am an AP Scholar with distinction
Senior Course Load: AP Micro/ Macro Economics (1st/2nd semester), AP Literature, Honors Calculus 3 (im one of 25 kids in my class taking this class. It's the highest math class offered in the school, even above AP Calc BC) AP French, Honors Engineering Design, and development through PLTW, and AP Biology
Extra curricular: Junior Year JV tennis and fresh/soph tennis teams
3 years of my high school's FIRST Robotics team
2 years as an officer in FBLA
Officer in Naitonal Honor Society
Large amount of community service
State Chess champion and nationally ranked in speedchess (if only chess was as important as football...)
Played piano for about 9-10 years
Started an engineering organization at my school
Ethnicity: Asian
I think I will have pretty solid essays
In state

Can someone pleas tell me my chances of getting into U of I engineering? I would truly appreciate it. This senior year, I plan on stepping it up. My weighted gpa 2nd semester of junior year was around a 4.6. I think I can step it up and hope to get around a 4.75-4.92 this semester. I am also looking into schools like Purdue engineering, U of M in Ann Arbor, Northwestern, UCLA, and a few more. Do I have any shot? Thanks!!

I also left out the fact that I was academic team/ scholastic bowl for two years. I plan on doing varsity scholastic bowl this year. I also placed 2nd in the state in an FBLA event.

Should be fine. Do you have any major in specific for engineering? Different majors have different admit stats/rates

Thanks so much for the reply. I truly appreciate it. At the moment, I do not have a particular preference. I know that U of I has a new engineering program for undecided students, but that seems really selective. I thought about biomedical or possibly industrial. I might apply to a slightly easier major, and if i really hate it, i think i should be able to transfer (assuming i maintain good grades).

I’m asking because your stats might be a bit low for CS or Electrical. I think you’ll be good for biomed/industrial. Good luck!

ok that you so much for the advice!

Your stats are pretty much inline with most of the engineering majors’ matriculates, so it seems that you have a pretty good shot.

Please understand, however, that it ultimately depends on not only the quality of your application, but also the major to which you apply.

Thank you very much for the advice. I have been having a hard time finding acceptance rates for various majors. I am still not sure which major I am interested in. Are there any particularly “easy” engineering majors to get into, compared to others? I am definitely not considering something like computer science. I thought about bioengineering for a little bit, or possibly even mechanical. I am truly open to everything. At this point, I would just be thrilled to get into the school of engineering, regardless of major.

Also, is there a correlation between the school’s ranking in a particular major, with its difficulty of acceptance? For example, For Engineering Physics, U of I is ranked number 1 in the US. Does that make it the hardest/ one of the hardest to get into, compared to something ranked more like 5 or 6?

You’re over thinking this. All engineering programs are highly selective. Apply to what you want the most, or, if you are unsure, apply engineering undecided. My advice, however, is to pick a program, since that is a big plus that Illinois offers. If you’re accepted, you’re in, no evaluation after your first year courses. You know you’re in the program before committing to the university, unlike many other universities. Having said that, your ACT composite of 32 (they don’t superscore) is competitive but your GPA and class rank are a bit low. It looks like you’re taking rigorous classes, and that’s considered too. I’d rank you as a slight reach. You should definitely apply, and pick the program that you really want, not one you think might not be too selective, since, from year to year, the amount of applications and the competitiveness of the application pool varies by program.

you dont even play sports tho

i have played tennis for three years. I will be on varsity this year.

There is no reliable correlation between rank and difficulty of admission. Difficulty of admission is determined by the number of apps requesting that particular major in relation to the number of slots available. You can make an educated guess (CS apps will almost certainly be through the roof again), but the number of apps per major is volatile from year to year.

By allowing students to apply directly to their preferred major, Illinois makes it very difficult to determine ‘chances’ for admission to your first choice, despite being a school that is primarily concerned with your course rigor and stats.

Thank you very much for the input. I appreciate it.

Also, I just won homecoming king in my class of over 1100 students. Is that something I can put on my application?

New plan. after going to an excellent explore engineering event at U of I, I have decided to pursue industrial engineering. Does that change my chances?

I think you have a decent chance, but can I ask you a question? I’m not sure if you had this in your original info box, but I don’t think I saw it
