I am a rising senior at a really rigorous public high school which is ranked #12 in the country. (It used to be #4)
I plan on majoring in computer science in the school of engineering, or maybe even in the liberal arts and sciences if I have a better chance there.
UW GPA: 3.74
W GPA: 4.56

ACT: haven't taken it but based on practice tests= 30+

I have taken 5 AP's and will be taking 4 more this year.
I am in the IB program so I have many IB and AP tests to take this upcoming year as well.
I have taken all honors courses provided at my school and almost all AP courses and am taking the required IB courses part of the IB program.

Part of the Indian Cultural Society Youth Committee

I know that I don't particularly show interest in my specific major but I really am interested in computer science and have been coding since a very young age. I did not take computer science at my school because it required a pre-req that was a waste of time and I took physics honors instead. I plan to mention this in areas of the application where it is appropriate.

Please let me know my chances and what I have to work on, I will chance back! :)
Thanks for your time!

You have great chances. I know about 4 people majoring in compute science and they didn’t have half the grades you did. One friend is graduating this summer and has a 3.2 gpa… Don’t worry, keep it up and don’t slack off in college. Study hard and you will be fine!

Hi there! You’re a competitive applicant for all of the schools you listed-- I’d say all of them are matches. I’m planning on majoring in comp sci too and also in a similar situation (I don’t have any EC’s related to computer science or math/sci at all for that matter).

Have you considered any of the UC’s? UCLA, UCB and UCSD all have very good comp sci programs comparable to the ones of the schools you listed. You also might want to consider taking some SAT 2 subject tests in math 2 or physics to show more interest in comp sci. Best of luck!

That makes me feel a lot better, and I’ll definitely chance you back!
I have looked into UC Berkeley and CMU but I feel like I wouldn’t be a good candidate because they’re extremely hard to get into.
I’m thinking of taking math 2 and biology but I’ve been shying away from that because the schools I’m applying to don’t need it. I’m still iffy about it…
Thanks for chance-ing me!

Pretty good chance at UT and GT, both of which I may apply to. UW is pretty competitive but you seem like a competitive applicant. Maybe raise that SAT score, take it in October again; aim for a 2100+. I am applying for UT and they have an early admissions thing where you can apply early and it increases your chances of getting in, so I’m looking into that and you should to! Excellent ec’s and participation in cultural groups and all. I’m participating in similar things, I’m Indian too :p

Hi, do you have any financial limitations? You’re not likely to get any merit awards at these public universities (including UF, though you would get Bright Futures, of course). For example, UC-Berkeley charges $36K a year for OOS tuition. You may find that the privates (like USC, after grants) or CSU’s (like CSU-San Luis Obispo) are more affordable than the OOS publics.

vs1997: I’m taking the ACT in september so hopefully everything works out! honestly every college is competitive with computer science and I’m going to take the risk and apply anyways. And yeah I think I’m going to apply early action to whatever colleges on my list that offer it. And yeah haha I noticed that!

Gator88NE: I don’t really have financial limitations but my parents definitely prefer me staying in state (they want to save as much money as they can, which I totally understand). Yeah I don’t really expect getting merit awards or financial aid, but I’m willing to try.
My parents don’t want me to apply to private schools because even if I get merit awards, it will still be more expensive.
CMU, University of Miami, and UC Berkeley were all on my list but even if I got accepted (which I doubt would happen), my parents would not pay for that tuition. (As soon as I graduate from college, my sister goes into one. Meaning my parents would be paying 8 years in a row for college).

I think you’ll find a private university like Vanderbilt is likely much more affordable than OOS at GT, UIUC or UW. Run the net price calculators and compare the projected cost.

ForProxy you literally just copied and pasted what I said to another user on here. If you don’t want to chance me then don’t do it. Stop wasting your time and my time.

Hey lahula521, I feel acceptance into UIUC and UF would be likely and a match. For UT you may need to write a good essay, but it should also be within your ballpark. For any of these schools you could likely surprise them with a will written essay on your unique and different cultural experience.

How are your section scores?
Your GPA and SAT score is a bit weak for UIUC engineering. The mid 50 ACT is around 31-34 depending on majors. Average GPA for admission is ~3.9. It would be a reach for you as oos student.
