I’m currently a freshman student at Iowa State University and I’m majoring in mechanical engineering. I live in Illinois, so UIUC is in-state for me. Recently I started considering transferring to UIUC for mechanical engineering because I thought about giving it one last shot and because it is my dream school. I was denied from the college of engineering and was admitted to ACES instead, so I decided to go to Iowa State, which was my 2nd choice anyways.
My high school stats suck and are average, but I don’t think they will matter by the time I apply. If it’s relevant, I currently have a 3.79 GPA, and my second semester grades currently are all As (surprisingly) in calc-based physics, calc 2, mechanical engineering, and English.
I just wanted to know what it takes transfer to their mechanical engineering program because I know it is one of the most competitive programs there.
You should contact the Transfer Admissions office, and the Mech E department at UIUC, and ask what steps you need to take to apply for admission. It really is OK to do that. The folks in those places will have useful information for you.
Transferring is hard, especially into Mechanical Engineering. But definitely reach out. My daughter was admitted into PREP in Division of General Studies at UIUC for this fall and Iowa State engineering (mechanical). Right now she is trying to decide between the two schools.
Besides UIUC being your dream school and you being from Illinois, @eyb0ss why do you want to transfer? How is Iowa State? I ask b/c my daughter is trying to make this choice right now.
@enginmom4, Iowa State is a really good school. It’s very friendly, so when I came here, I felt welcomed. The campus is looks really cool, and there are a lot of clubs you can join. Iowa State is known more for its engineering programs, so the professors here are very helpful and teach very well. I want to transfer to UIUC because Iowa State is kind of far away from my home. UIUC is only 2 hours away, so it would be more convenient for me to go back home sometimes. UIUC is also one of the best engineering schools, so that’s also one of the reasons why I want to transfer. Iowa State is really good for engineering, but I have wanted to get into UIUC’s engineering program for a long time. And I want to transfer because most of my friends go there. Those are pretty much my reasons for transferring.
