I’m a Junior at Glenbrook North Highschool in Northbrook, Illinois and I want to apply to UIUC for Civil Engineering
GPA: 4.5 (should be 4.5-4.6 by senior year)
ACT: 33 when I took it cold (trying to get 34-35)
Class Rigor: ALL honors and AP classes (Math is AP CALC BC right now)
EC: DECA, Medical Club, president/founder of Coffee and Tea Club, (future) board member of MTAC (Marrow Transplant Awareness Campaign), and I have interned at a civil engineering company for the past 2 summers
What are my chances? Thanks!
What is your unweighted GPA?
3.63 unweighted GPA. Also, math subscore for ACT is 35 if that helps.
UIUC is a slight reach for you right now, but you still have time to bring up your GPA and your test scores. Try to raise your unweighted to a 3.70+ or higher.
Really? I thought I would have a good shot at getting in… Hmmmm. GBN is an extremely competitive and difficult school and I’m in-state. Thanks for your input anyways!
I changed my mind. Your test scores are in the middle 50%, you are in-state, and you have a very rigorous curriculum. Right now, I would call UIUC Engineering a high match, because your GPA is slightly low.
Thanks. I know many people who have gotten into UIUC engineering with lower scores than me, so I would have thought my chances would be better than that but I’m not sure.
Your GPA is the major concern. The admission average GPA for engineering school there is around 3.9. Your ACT score is within range. Although the admission rate for in state applicant is really high (~70%), I think it would be a very high match to low reach due to the low GPA. Nevertheless, your school profile report may help you to overcome the low GPA while your work experience would help too.
It’s so unfair. Because I’m in ALL honors and AP classes, I get some Bs and mostly As and that helps a lot with weighted GPA. But unwighted GPA is so unfair because someone with all regular classes and more As can get a higher unweighted GPA even though I went through 100x more work and stress than them. I could have saved myself so much stress and work and gotten all As in regular classes and been in a better position. Ugh.
