how does uiuc calculate gpa? are they looking at u/w or w? if weighted, do they cap at a max amount of semesters (UCs cap at 8)? How much do they look at essays and how hard is it to get into Honors program..im applying LSA

UIUC generally does not calculate or recalculate GPA for admission since instead it relies on class rank as of the end of your junior year in high school. If your high school does not rank, they will usually look at your grades in comparison to what they know about the particular high school to estimate rank. The importance of essays depends on where you stand in class rank and test score, the two most important factors. For those on the high end (above the usual middle 50% range), they have minor to no importance, for those on the low end (below the middle 50% range), they have significant importance. In between, they have some importance. Difficulty of getting into honors program depends on which one you are talking about since there are numerous honors programs -- the campus honors program, the James Scholars program that each college has, and then numerous departmental honors programs. The campus honors program takes a limited number of top admittees (usually something close to 125) and is quite difficult to get into. The James Scholars program of each college generally depends on your class rank or test score for admission and thresholds needed differ among the colleges. Departmental honors programs vary in their criteria for admission but usually take only a limited number.

thanks for the answers drusba. On the app, it jsut says "if u are interested in honors programs..blahblah write 50 words..." soI guess I won't be able to pick. Should I mention in an essay that Im a senior but taking all courses at community colege and currently enrolled in their honors program? will that give me a higher chance of admitance? My uw gpa is 3.6, ACT comp 30, SAT I M750,W680,CR620, SATIIs 760,740,680. how do I look?

You don't pick honors programs. The campus program and James Scholars depend on information submitted as part of the application and if you qualify for either, you will get a letter telling you so when admitted. Departmental honors programs are very often only available after the freshman year. Mentioning the community college info can only help. However, your stats appear low for the campus program and it is hard to tell for the James Scholars. However, with either, more may qualify than one might believe because the university offers the honors programs to a lot more admittees than actually end up in it because historically there are many qaulified applicants who are accepted who either (a) end up going to a different university, or (b) attend UIUC but turn down one or more of the homors programs.
