I am going to apply with a 3.36/3.92 cumulative/major GPA. I have three years of internship experience in drafting/design/field work with two different prominent civil engineering companies in Chicago and three very stellar recommendation letters. Do I have a shot?

Also, do they look at major GPA (last two years & civil classes only) or is cumulative more important?

What are your GRE scores and what school did you attend for undergrad?

Your whole GPA will be looked at, but they will definitely take your major GPA and last 60 credit hour GPA into account as well, so don’t despair. I got into the ME program as a grad student with both of my GPAs being worse than yours, but I had good recommendations, internships, research, and GRE scores.

taking the GRE in a week. Anybody else from Civil, I would like to get some civil students in my position. Also went to University of Illinois at Chicago. thanks

Of course you have a shot. Illinois-Chicago isn’t the most spectacular school in terms of prestige, but it’s by no means subpar, UIUC’s familiar with it, and you’ve got a great set of experience and a great GPA. See how the GRE goes. You should be hitting 800 (or very close to it) on quant, and the rest doesn’t matter too much. Helps if you’re a native English speaker.

Yeah, it is actually the opposite of most undergrad programs, where being a domestic student actually helps. I have heard of several schools applying minority and diversity fellowships to white americans in graduate programs because of the fact that they actually are the minority these days. I couldn’t believe it at first, but I suppose it really DOES makes sense.
