University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign (UIUC) says it gives out 30 full-tuition merit-based scholarship to in-state applicants. Has anyone heard if these have been awarded or is word still to come? UIUC's web-site only says late March/early April. My son has a full-tuition offer from another school but UIUC is his first choice and the other school would like a decision early next week.

Are you talking about a general merit scholarship or National Merit. Also I am surprised that the other school wants a decision early next week, most schools would wait until May 2nd or so.

You may want to post this question in the UIUC forum, especially if it is a general merit award.

I’m talking about for NM finalists. UIUC claims to award 30 full-tuition scholarships to National Merit, National Achievement, and National Hispanic Scholar finalists. It’s called the Provost Scholarship. Given the number and how many NM finalists there are in Illinois (a large percentage of whom at least apply to UIUC), it’s a longshot but it would be nice to know for sure that he’s not getting one before committing elsewhere.

As for why the other university would like a response by next week, they apparently have backup candidates they will contact if our son goes elsewhere.

Can you call UIUC and asked if/when the NMF scholarships will be awarded?

Called UIUC and they were less than helpful. “I think they were mailed last week but I’m not sure” and “if you are offered one, it will be on your financial aid letter on-line. But they’re back-logged so they might not have processed it yet.” In other words, there is no way to be sure you aren’t being offered one.
