Hi everyone.
I just got accepted into UIUC nuclear engineering and im waiting to hear back from Umich for nuclear engineering and i just have a few quick questions about both.
First, I have heard that the UIUC nuclear engineering program, although still very strong, is not AS high quality as all of the other engineering disciplines at UIUC...is there any truth to this, and if there is, is the program still relatively strong?
Also, in the case that i get accepted to Umich, which of the two colleges is better for nuclear engineering??

bump…

Michigan has been number at or near the top in graduate nuclear engineering
for many years. There are no current rankings for undergraduate in this sub-field.

Bump…

The NE program is fine. It’s a smaller program (In 2011-12 UIUC awarded 47/12 NE BS/MS degrees vs. 205/147 for Civil and 232/84 for EE), and for that reason some may think the other programs are “stronger”, but that’s the nature of the degree/industry.

As a NE you take many of the same classes as ME’s and others. Only your core classes will be NE and those will have the advantage of small class sizes (vs. the more popular major core classes). Of course, being larger programs, the other majors will have more research opportunities, etc.

Good Luck!

Both are top 21 nuclear engineering bachelor’s degree programs.

I know that UIUC (at least for grad rankings) being in the top ten seems really good, but the only thing im worried about is that because so few schools offer NE, the denominator is much smaller, so being ranked ten in NE is basically like being average…

anyone?..

Don’t worry about it. No one thinks UIUC’s NE program is average. :)
