A friend of mine got into both UMich and UIUC (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), and was looking for some advice into picking which one would be a better place for him to go.

He's an international student (Taiwanese), wants to study electrical engineering, and is planning to get at least a masters degree after college. Both schools rank about equal for him in terms of environment. Any ideas for which college would be best match?

If he is there totally for electrical engineering, then u of i definitely has the better program. However, UMich isn't bad at all in that area and is a more prestigious school overall and has a incredible business program. So if he isnt sure whether ee is the ultimate career choice for him and might want to crossover to business, he might want to consider ann arbor.

yeah, what zephyr said. uiuc has a great engineering program, and umich (aka "public ivy") has a great business program, and both campuses are very nice. i applied to uiuc and umich as well (yet to hear from umich), but honestly if I had to choose, i personally would choose umich for various reasons.

Actually, I stumbled on this one and was surprised. I am an International student and have got admission to both UIUC and UMICH. ECE in UIUC;in UMICH though I applied for ECE, got admission to Engg. Since I am International student, I am somewhat confused. UMICH is rather a better known name outside. Engg ranking for UIUC is one above UMICH. Does this really matter? In terms of industry contacts, internships and job offers, is UMICH better than UIUC? Can someone advice.

UMICH all round and as carp said "public ivy" - good in almost every area

UIUC - more focused on engineering

although UIUC is 1 rank higher... ranking is not everthing. some rankings are even fair (take student body size into account)
1 rank difference... hmm.... who cares.... if u get in both choosing them will make the slightest difference.

basically if you are sure that you are going to do engineering then i guess UIUC would be the more logical choice since it is higher ranked, but if you want to explore other majors too then UMich is the place! GL

I'd choose UIUC. I didn't even bother applying to UMich because I knew I wouldn't go there if I got accepted to UIUC. Although the area is in the middle of no where (:P), the school community is nice, the dorms are great, and it is a great school after all.

But this is coming from someone whose family went to UIUC...so I guess I'm playing favorites ;D

One drawback to U of M for engineering majors is that you have to shuttle alot between North campus and Central campus. Engineering program is on North campus but most freshman and non-engineering courses are on Central campus. You also have to choose between a dorm on North campus or a dorm on Central campus. Any way you slice it, you will get very familiar with the shuttle bus system.
