Plz reply asap......thanks !!

Whether you’re required to take the Chemistry placement depends on your program of study, but this page tells all about the ALEKS math placement exam:

[ALEKS | Mathematics Courses | Illinois](Access ALEKS PPL | Mathematics at Illinois)

i saw that page bt thnx neways…just wanted to know the difficulty level and topics in chem…lemme noe if u hv any insights regarding it !!

Chem test can cover anything you were supposed to learn in a basic chemistry course in high school. For those who did well in chem, it is usually not hard; for others it can be. It is a “placement” test meaning it simply determines in which chemistry course you will have to start if you take chemistry in college. As noted it is not required of all (generally required of engineering and science majors)

I called the Center for Teaching Excellence, which administers the placement tests, and tried to cajole more information out of them regarding the Chemistry test, and it’s, as usual, exactly how Drusba said. I explained that the Math Placement test information available indicated that it just covered pre-calculus material, and that was helpful in narrowing down the formulas you might want to look over prior to taking the test…so, I said, how about providing some additional information on the Chem Placement test, as Math does for its placement test. She was having none of it, however, saying that it can cover anything that you had in high school chemistry, and that you shouldn’t try to study up for it; just take it, and that’s that. So, there ya go.

by pre-calculus, do they actually mean the class pre-calc, or do they mean everything before calculus? probably the latter, but just making sure.

My son just got done taking the Math Placement a couple of days ago, and yes, it covers everything prior to calculus. It’s administered by Aleks, and asks a series of questions in various areas of math. When you answer a question correctly, it will make the next one slightly more difficult, and vice-versa. Since he’s been admitted to Engineering, he’ll have to take the Chemistry and Physics placement tests too. I’ve been looking at the placement test page for a while now, and I swear the Physics placement requirement wasn’t on their until recently, but I may just be going blind, I guess.

At any rate, while I’m sure he’ll do fine in the Chem placement, since he’d had Chem for the last two years in HS, he hasn’t had Physics since Sophomore year. I think he’ll place out of Chem with at least a 4 on the Chem AP, but next up for Engineering is the Physics sequence, which I had hoped he could start his first semester at UIUC. Now I’m a bit worried that he won’t be able to blow all those physics cobwebs off in order to do well enough in the Physics placement.

Oh well, placement tests, homework, final transcripts, health form, and he’s ready for Summer Registration.

there is a physics placement test?

Yep, near the bottom of the placement test information page…

OK, please tell me that I am not totally clueless. Was the physics placement exam added recently? I don’t remember seeing it a month ago. What a curveball that would have been if, as I expect, son will be doing the placement tests at the last minute? Good that CC parents are more thorough than I am.
