Hi, I am an upcoming senior at a nationally ranked public school. I am interested in majoring in computer science/engineering. My school does not post rankings, but under their guidelines, I am roughly in the top 10%. UIUC is my goal school since it is in-state for me.

GPA: 3.6 unweighted
ACT: 32, 8 writing

Courses:
- weighted classes with mostly A's.
AP tests taken:
Lang/Comp - 4
Government- 4
Psychology - 4
- I'm taking Calc BC and Stats this year, as well as programming 1&2

EC:
band: 4 years (top band 3 years)
Flute Choir: 3 years
Girls Engineer Math and Science Club: 1 year
Human Rights Club: 1 year
Volunteer at a hospital: 70hrs
traveled to China in an ensemble group, performed in various cities
Chinese Honors Society
Freshman Mentor

Other thoughts:
-Do I have an advantage if I am a female applying for engineering? I know UIUC has a
Women in Engineering group, and they "promote engineering to women and minorities of all ages".
-Should I take SAT II tests? Does it help strengthen an application?
-Suggestions of other colleges are welcome!

Thanks for taking time to read this!

-UIUC is a high match I think. Can you apply early?
-I think it’s an advantage but not too much, especially since you’re asian (probably)
-yes definitely you can always not send them if they’re bad. I suggest taking math (look over topics for 1 and 2 to decide which one to take)
-look into UT Austin and GIT
-chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1532897-linguistics-chances-updated.html

Purdue - Low match
UW - Low match
UIUC (engineering) - Match

I think you have a really good shot, and will get in! I’d aim higher if I were you though.

EDIT: IF YOU ARE DOING ENGINEERING THEN YES TAKE SAT 2’s. Try to take Math level 2, Physics… and then Bio or Chem depending on which field of engineering you want to get into.

yes I’m planning to apply early admission, and I’ll look more into the SAT II math. Thanks!

You are in at UW and Purdue and UIUC. Whether you get into the program of your choice direct admission is the question. Computer science at UW is very competitive.

Chance me? :)

UIUC does not accept SAT2s

Do priority filing by November 1 and you should be a match for UIUC. Make sure you write good essays for the application too.
Note that there are 3 computer science programs at UIUC with 1 in engineering and 2 in LAS. Find out which one you are most interested in as you will apply directly for a major.
As for Purdue, it would be a high match for oos. Both your GPA and ACT score are just at (or slightly below) their engineering admission average. If you get accepted, you may apply to the mid-west exchange program to help your oos tuition.
For UW, which one are you referring to? Please clarify.

For UW, I am planning on applying for their Computer Sciences (Letters and Science). Also, after some research, I’ve decided not to take SAT II tests mainly because the colleges I’m looking at don’t require it (or don’t look at it for admission purposes). But thanks for the feedback everyone!

I have no info about UW. But do look up the 3 computer science programs at UIUC:

Computer Science at Engineering
Mathematics and Computer Science
Statistics and Computer Science.

If you are within the top 10% in class, in state, and female, you should have a very good chance to get into UIUC. Nevertheless, getting a higher ACT score would definitely help and may get you some merit aid and/or enrolling honor programs.
