What is the difference between the major Statistics and Computer Science and the major Computer Science in UIUC? They're in different departments, but it seems as though they include a lot of the same courses. Also, how difficult is it to get into one of those two majors at UIUC? I am in-state with a 3.6 GPA unweighted (approximately), and a 32 ACT.

FYI, there is also a Math & Computer Science in LAS. Anyway, I think you do have a good chance considering in-state with near average admission stat for engineering there.

Thanks for the reply billcsho!

i am in the same boat as you- i know cs in engineering is more competitive is it safe to assume that the other departments will be less competitive? I just a a 31 act instead of 32.

^ What is your UW GPA? If you are in state, you should have a good chance as 31 is right at the 25%.

it will be about 3.6 or higher but i’m applying regular admission, i also want to get into the twin cities

I think the admission average GPA for UIUC engineering is near 3.9 and their mid 50 ACT is 31-34. Being in state would definitely have an advantage. With a lower than average GPA, if you can show a rigorous course load that may help as long as your test scores is within range. The strange thing is, UIUC does not want recmmendation at all. So there is one less variable in the game. You do need to write great essays though. I believe there are two essays that you need to write. Start early and work hard on that.

Thanks but where did you get those stats from bilscho

[U of I Admissions: Freshman Admission Requirements](Page Not Found, Illinois Undergraduate Admissions)
And from the visit there last week.

I think my chaances would be relatively better at Minnesota- even if i am not in state, and even purdue and ohio state than U OF I
also in my case CS is also in LAS and Business i believe- generally i would believe the selectivity would be more leniant- did you hear about anything during your vist?

For UIUC, you apply to the specific major rather than school. So even the overall LAS admission stat is lower, there are some programs that are as competitive as in engineering school (e.g. ChemE/ChBE). They did not show me the stat on that but just told me in the LAS session during the visit. There are around 15 or so very popular majors in LAS that they showed on one slide. UMN and Purdue may be slightly less competitive in general but may be more competitive for oos when compared to in state at UIUC. If you are from Illinois, you may apply to the mid-west exchange program to get some financial aid to attend other public schools in the mid-west to help to pay part of the oos tuition.

You are about average for getting into CSE, safely in CLA.

yup and i mean my weighted gpa will be nearly a 4.4. either top 5 percent or really really close of my graduating class. I am just focusing on doing everything i can to get a head start on a rigorous course work. I’ll probably take the ACT once more but i doubt i will improve.
