Hey guys, I'm currently at a community college and plan on applying during next fall for the Spring of 2012, my major is Agricultural, Consumer and Economic Sciences with a concentration in Financial Planning, just wanted to know what my chances are, here are some stats:

College GPA: 3.89
EC's: Student Leadership Commission, Alpha Beta Gamma (Business honors society), Phi Theta Kappa, Treasurer- Finance and Investment Group
Work/Involvement: Currently doing an internship with UBS Private Wealth Management and will continue during the summer, part time volunteer work at a local youth center/ church. I also have worked at the local library for the past 3 summers.

In regards to credit hours, I will have 53 by the time I finish next fall ( I talked to an admissions counselor at U of I and since I have over 30 hours my high school grades/ACT will not be taken into account) making me eligible for Sophomore transfer admission. I know there are different requirements for Soph/junior level but I currently have received A's in both econ courses, both accounting courses, both english and speech courses and by the time next fall I will have the Sophomore level math (pre-calc) and language requirement completed (along with one more of the suggested courses). I also plan on focusing my essays about how I was diagnosed with a learning in high school yet managed to overcome it and be successful in college.

I have talked to counselors both at U of I and my current school and they said everything looks pretty solid, just wanted your guys input though

You’re going to get in.

Just try to do a lot of EC’s because UIUC really likes those

Thanks for the response, any other opinions?

One website I really loved when I was worrying about admission was:
[University of Illinois > University Office for Planning & Budgeting > Data and Research > Transfer Characteristics](University of Illinois > University Office for Planning & Budgeting > Data and Research > Transfer Characteristics)

It shows transfer admissions data from 1999-2010. Since you’re coming from a community college in Chicago, it should give you a good idea of what kind of transfer students have come from your school. I only wish they were more specific about the students in the 4.00-3.26 GPA range (kind of wide…).

And although UIUC is known for their love of EC’s, I got in with a 3.846 GPA (from an Illinois community college, as well) and no real EC’s. I do work 20 hours a week and volunteer 3 hours a week, but that’s about it. Plus, my essay was mediocre at best. Going off of my experience, I’d say you have a very good chance. Just keep those grades up!

I mean, I feel that my EC’s are pretty solid, especially the internship that directly correlates to my major, but is there any thing else I should do? Also, what major did you apply to Girbygirl?

I applied to Chemistry in LAS. I think they really just want to see that you’re doing something outside of class, which you obviously are. It looks like the minimum gpa for your major is a 2.5 and chemistry was a 2.7. Even though acceptance is determined mostly by how many seats they have available, taking into account your all together higher stats… I’d say don’t worry. And indeed, the internship looks very good.
