UIUC v Wash U - Research Opportunities

so I just got accepted to Wash U via waitlist, and I am really unsure about what to do. the money isn't there, so I am leaning towards u of i. I have also heard that research is better at u of i, and since I would like to pursue a career in research, that is a heavy weighing factor (along with money) does anyone know enough about the research at u of i vs wash u to help me??? i only have until tomorrow night!!

go wash u…better school

what major? eng, ill; biological, wash u.

good job at ill will lead you to grad school anywhere. save $$$

My son is in engineering at UIUC and is doing quite a bit of research. He’s a sophomore and in a program right now called Illinois Scholars Undergraduate Research.

He is paid for his experience, and get 3 credit hours. When he was a freshman, he did research with a professor as well. He did not get paid for that, nor did he get credit for it. However, he enjoyed it, and worked in an amazing lab.

Hope that helps!

I don’t think I’m being biased to say that research should be more abundant at UIUC. The decision to go to Wash U would be based on other factors. However, I do have a young relative who graduated from Wash U with a major in mechanical engineering and did not have a good experience, although he graduated top of his class. His complaint I think was more social, and the (lack of) friendly students. That could be anecdotal, so don’t weigh that too heavily.

I have to second itsme’s opinion, though it certainly wouldn’t hurt you to go to UIUC for biological kind of things either. Regardless of what field you are going into, UIUC ought to give you ample opportunity to get into a good graduate school, which is necessary if you want a career in research. When it comes to that, your graduate school will be more important than your undergrad when all is said and done, so you the difference in overall prestige between WUSTL and UIUC will be negligible. Save the money unless you just really would rather be at WUSTL. It is a fantastic school in an underrated city.
