I'm bascially down to two schools and I need some outsider opinion on which school would be best for me. I got into Electrical Engineering Department of both colleges. Looking at the US News rank, University of Illinois -Urbana Champaign obviously has better program in that area. (4th in the nation) Johns Hopkins is only at 24th place, but it's considered one of top elite school. What do you guys think?

Also, can I get away by sending in two acceptance forms and not go to one of them?

Edit. Assuming the cost is out of the equation.

You can't go wrong with either school academically. UIUC engineering is great and JHU is a world reknown name. These 2 schools are so different from each other it is hard to compare them. You need to decide what type of school you want and what feels best to you.

Last Summer my son did the Pre-College program at JHU, and did not even submit an application to them. My son enjoyed his experience there, but the school did not have the right feel for him. He wants to experience college via a good mix of study and having fun. He also is going the engineering route, but he is undecided as to which discipline, but he doesn't have a strong Bio interest and knows that he won't pursue Biomed Engineering (the largest engineering dept. at JHU.

JHU is a very conservative small school, ranked as one of the best schools in the country/world, best known for Medical and pre-med, a great BioMed Engineering program, great lacrosse team, very academmically oriented, located in a city with some safety issues especially by the Med School (Downtown). When I asked one of the summer program's RA's from New Hampshire, why he chose JHU over Dartmouth, he said "I didn't want to go to a party school".

UIUC is a BIG diverse midwestern University with Big 10 athletics, many top programs including one of the best all around for engineering and business, Big school activities, fraternities and college life. UIUC is also somewhat conservative when compared to others like Wisconsin or most of the Ivies/Northeastern Universities, but much more liberal than JHU.

Choose what feels best for you both academically and socially. Good luck.

Almost forgot.
One of my son's suitemates at JHU had submitted deposits to JHU and 3 other schools. He used the summer program to help him decide.

You can do that if you wish, but remember you will not only lose you admission deposit, but also your housing deposit when you make your final decision.

My son has asked to do this with his 4 school decision, but it is not a possibility, especially when one of the choices is Virginia Tech and their $400 deposit due by May 1. Only 11 days left to decide.

also there are kids on the waiting lists who are hoping to gain acceptance to those schools. In my opinion, go with JHU...this will in the end help u with grad school, if u maintain a good gpa.

i know kids with high gpa's in uiuc engineering that have gotten into good grad schools like MIT and stanford. Go to the school that has a better feel for you.

For UIUC engineering and business, how large are the classes? How often do you have classes under 25? How often are classes taught by TAs? Do you get to know professors there as an undergrad?

Is it the kind of place that most people pass through anonomously in 4 years?

I don't know...in my opinion when people hear of John Hopkins they automatically think of "ohh! medicine!" but when people think of UIUC the think "oh engineering!"
that's just my thought.
