I’m planning to be a biomedical engineer as a pre-med student. Obviously, UIUC is better known for engineering, but (correct me if I’m wrong) I think Madison is better for pre-med.
Academics aside, I’m also conflicted about the general environment of the school. Being a racial minority (Asian Indian, to be specific), I love the fact that Urbana is incredibly diverse, and I’m worried about feeling a little out of place at Madison. That being said, I’m in love with Madison’s campus and am not particularly enthusiastic about Urbana’s campus.
Thanks for any input!!
Both of these are terrific universities, so there isn’t a bad choice here. If both are equally affordable for your family, then you can safely choose based on fit. Right now you favor Madison, so go there.
If however, UIUC is less expensive, then that is your best option. Save your money for med school.

No, UW-M is not better for premed.
@happymomof1 Right now, I’m favoring UIUC, but my main problem is the campus. I do not like the campus at all, and I feel like there’s nothing to do there (since I don’t drink, am not too involved with sports, and am not planning to rush.) Also, about 20 kids from my high school are going there, and I don’t want it to be a high school reunion.
I wouldn’t be concerned about running into 20 people from high school when there is a medium sized city full of about 45,000 students. It’s a shame that a school the quality of UIUC is situated in a rather boring location. I can understand your concern Neurogirl07. It’s probably my least favorite campus location in the B1G.
