UIUC vs. Michigan

Hey everyone, I have narrowed my schools down to Illinois Urbana Champaign (In state) vs Michigan Ann Arbor for Industrial Engineering. Michigan will end up being $5500/year in unsubs more, after what my parents will pay. Mich is #2 in the country for Industrial, while Illinois' Industrial engineering is stuffed in with General engineering and after visiting both I feel like it is inferior, albeit the #10 ranking.

I feel like Michigan is still the better choice, even with the loans. But Illinois is in state and stress free, and I'm a James Scholar (research ops and register for class before Varsity athletes). Is Mich worth the 8 spots in ranking, and the prestige of the degree after graduation?

Put simply, no… unless you just feel like you belong there, at which point I can’t really put a price on how much more comfortable you do or don’t feel there. The difference in your career coming from either place will not be worth the $22000 plus interest that you will owe in loans if all else is held constant.

shouldn’t we also count the amount of cash that the parents have to pay at Michigan v. Illinois to make this an even comparison financially?

if the “8 spots in ranking and prestige” are the only reasons you want to go to Michigan, then it is definitely not worth it one bit.
if there are other reasons, like that you enjoy the school’s campus culture or atmosphere more, then maybe
