UIUC vs U of Washington

I am an international student who got accepted to both schools as social work majors...and I am planning on changing majors to maybe business or economics.

I just want a comparison of the two schools because major-wise...UW seems to be better at social services while UIUC wins in engineering and things like business/economics...they seem similar.

UW:
- Seattle- major city with opportunities
- Beautiful campus
- Higher tuition than UIUC (49k?)
UIUC:
- Champaign...corns?
- Lower tuition (45k?)

I think I like UW better...overall...but UIUC seems better with name value? HELP!

Which school has a better chance of me getting a job in the states or like Korea? Which is where I am from.

Look at the conditions for changing colleges/majors. Social work -> business/economics is probably difficult. Go where the conditions are the easier to meet.
Since the difference in Cost of attendance is only $4,000, UW would be better and certainly is better in terms of “brand” than UIUC (outside CS, UIUC is not that “strong”, it’s had lots of budget cuts, etc. It’s lost a lot of luster in the past 25 years.)

myos, why do you continue to bash big ten schools like UIUC and Wisconsin
UW better and certainly has a better brand? Says who?
Last I heard both schools are about equal in most areas

If you want a school with a good business/econ program that is well respected, either school would suit you well. Just decide between fit, because both schools are extremely similar as far as academics and job prospects are concerned.

UofI: I don’t bash.
If you look at my many threads, you’ll see I actually recommend Wisconsin often, as well as UIUC. But UIUC has suffered from many budget cuts since 2008 and it’d be disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

Finally, if it’s easier to switch majors at UIUC, then UIUC is a better pick. Since OP has been admitted to Social Work and that tends to be a college/major with different requirements than Econ or, especially, business, ease of switching majors should be the prime factor.

However, as of now, UWA is in better shape and, I believe, would provide OP with a better experience than UIUC (Seattle, for one, vs. U-C.) And UWA has a strong general “brand” - and it’s even starting to compete with UIUC on CS because of the companies that recruit, but UIUC has the edge for CS. You’re free not to believe me of course.

“and certainly is better in terms of brand”
that simply is not true though. In terms of reputation rankings it does quite well, and it has remained steady in most academic rankings in light of the budget cuts. In terms of CS I wouldn’t necessarily put one ahead of the other even.

what about for future employment possibilities in the US or Korea, etc.
for economics, business???

@uofiapplicant‌ @myoS

Both have about equal pull internationally.
Like I said, this one will come down to personal preference and whether or not you want to spend 4k a year + plus living costs in Seattle.

Seattle says it is around 49k while UIUC says it ranges from 46k to 52k…

Washington has had SEVERE budget cuts during the recession–much worse than UIUC. 1 of worst in USA.
