My son was admitted to above universities as an undergraduate students in Electrical Engineering except UCSD in undecided major of the Sixth college. He is determined to be an engineering student and plans to go to graudate school in the future. He is an international student. So the costs have little influence on our selections. As for me, I think UIUC has higher ranked engineering program, which makes it seem like a better choice. Those UC universities will offer better climate and locations. I am wondering how good are their EE programs, which are ranked lower than UIUC’s. Rose-hulman is special to us. It is small and cares more for undergraduate education. But it is less recognized in our country.
What matters to me most are internship and research opportunities, quality of education, reputation in industries of USA. Because my son hopes to work in USA after graduation. I will aprreciate any of your opinions much. Thanks!
I would eliminate UCSB from your list because it does not have a strong engineering program and the school has a reputation for being a party school. Rose Hulman has great opportunities and students who graduate from there end up going to big companies such as google, amazon etc. UC davis has a good engineering program, and your son would easily find a job in the bay area. UCSD also has a good engineering program as well, and I would say its slightly stronger than Davis. However, since he was not admitted to his major, I would eliminate it from the list. UIUC is really good for electrical engineering! All of these schools (except UCSB) have strong engineering programs, and companies know that. I would encourage your son to visit all of these schools and see which one best fits him. In my opinion, he should go to UIUC. Hope this helps!
I also forgot to mention that Rose Hulman does not provide you with as many research opportunities as some of the other schools because it is small. But i think the quality of education is really good, if not better than most of these schools. UIUC is probably the best fit because it has a balance. The program, and quality of education is good and the school has many research opportunities.

Always go for the direct admits, so cross UCSD off the list. I can only comment on UC Davis, which is an excellent program, within 1 - 1 1/2 hours of the Silicon Valley/Bay area for internships but it’s campus location may not be as appealing as his other options. Take Rankings with a grain of salt, since there is different criteria used by each ranking entity. I would also make sure he has a good plan B at home, since he should not count on staying in the US for a job. Due to the current political climate and the cost of sponsoring an International student, many employers will not consider him as a viable applicant.
Thank you so much for your kind advice, which are very helpfu to us . We have decided to choose UIUC. :-*
