Hello! I’m a current sophomore and looking to transfer to either University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or the University of Miami for the Fall 2018 semester. I was wondering what the general opinion is when it comes down to these two schools. UIUC is in my home state which means in state tuition, and Miami is a flat rate for both in and out of state. It is expensive but they offer good scholarships. Both are well known in their regions-the Midwest and the South. I am also currently interested in studying Communication. I’ve heard UM has a great communication program and also has the facilities and options for choices such as broadcast journalism. I realize that UIUC typically ranks better than UM in programs, but on US News rankings, Miami passed up UIUC when it comes to nationally ranked universities. At UIUC, I don’t really feel like I “fit” there as much as I do at UM. It’s a beautiful school with a great reputation but it doesn’t feel completely “me”. Additionally, I really want to experience being more independent for myself(cliche reason IK) and I feel that UM would provide a better opportunity for that. I really want to get away from home and have some unique experiences. I also have family in the Miami area so at least I know someone. I know that UIUC is a great school, but my heart is in Miami. Honestly, it’s mostly my parents pushing for UIUC, as I’m more passive about it when it comes down to these two. I realize I’m leaning towards UM but would be interested in what you all had to say about both schools and in comparing them. Also, if there seems to be a clearly better option. I look forward to any feedback you have or any experiences with either school, or both! Cheers!
