A while ago, I posted in the forum asking which school was better academically for a business major (UT austin seemed to have a slight edge among the replies). Now, having finally gotten into UT austin (acceptance letter came friday woo woo), I was wondering which college would people say is better (disregarding academics)? I mean like lifestyle, fun, student body, campus, etc (i.e. pros and cons of either school).

Thanks!

oh and also, I forgot to mention in my initial UIUC vs UT Austin thread that I'm planning to pursue a 2nd major in math. would this effect which school is better academically?

They should both be fine for math, but you may want to look up the faculty rosters and course listings in each math department to see if either has a selection of math courses that is more suitable for your math interests.

UIUC is UT at Austin’s closest rival to the title of best school for Accounting – which UT has held for decades for its UG, Master, and PhD programs.

For the complete business degrees and possibly math second major, the comparisons should be overwhelmingly in the favor of Austin, especially when considering the McCombs offerings, and possibly its BHP Program. But that is for academics.

The decision between spending four years (or more) in Austin versus Illinois has to be subjective --and subject to personal biases. As a Texan, it would take me 1 second to pick Austin, and for a multitude of reasons. I think that Austin is better at all levels, safe and except for the oppressive heat in the summer, and its far left political tendencies that can be overbearing. Of course, comparing to the political climate in Illinois, Austin might be a picnic.

But then, they could not have paid me enough to spend years of pure torture in Illinois. :)

I am definitely a biased Austinite but it’s a fantastic place to live. As long as you’re not about to die in the heat, and you don’t mind the liberal leaning politically, Austin has a great social scene and community that is pretty ideal for college students.

What is your home state?
I’m sure each school has relevant pros and cons, but if one is in your own state, that’s the one I’d probably pick (if cost matters to you at all).

If cost is not a factor, then for a pre-professional major like business, you might want to consider where you’d prefer to live and work after graduation. Do you have family ties in either Texas or Illinois? Are you leaning towards a business/industry that is relatively strong in either state?

Agreed with post-graduate preference on where you want to live. If you see yourself in Chicago then UIUC. If Dallas/Houston/etc. then UT. Another important consideration is don’t forget that burnt orange is a more handsome color than navy and their bright orange.

Oos for both. My gut feeling says uiuc. I kind of like the eye sore orange that Illinois has. But that’s just opinion. I haven’t visited either campus so that could sway my decision. But besides that i just want to hear the viewpoint of a uiuc proponent. Or more detailed advantages of ut over uiuc.

The translation of the above is that what you REALLY want is for people to tell you that UIUC represents a better choice than UT. It will take many repetitive threads before one poor soul puts you out of misery by telling you … UIUC is a better school and a better fit for you.

In the meantime, you should accept that the consensus will simply point in the direction of Austin.

UIUC might be better for some areas of engineering (read higher ranked). I don’t usually hear of UIUC and top business school in the same sentence for undergrad.
