I'm studying abroad at University of Edinburgh next year, and I'm just curious about class structure, as I get the impression it is very different from the US. I'll be pretty much exclusively taking third year history courses. I've noticed the lectures are much longer (1:50 once a week). But I've also heard something about tutorials? Do all classes have those? How do they work? Thanks.

I’m not 100% sure about history but I’m fairly certain all courses have tutorials. As I understand, in the humanities a tutorial is basically an hour a week where you discuss assigned readings and questions you’ve been given. It’s usually a fairly small groups, and you meet with a postgrad or a lecturer.

If you have other questions about Edinburgh, let me know. I can’t really answer specific things about history, as I study maths and physics, but I can answer general questions about the uni.

Hey guys I just found this excellent blog about applying to school in the UK. You should check it out! [The Uni Guide](http://theuniguide.■■■■■■■■■■/)

the UK system is very different. the above poster is right, tutorials are the norm there. it is very independent insofar that you are doing a lot of work outside of the classroom. this is why i like it because you’re not having your teacher hold your hand…they expect you to be mature enough to think on your own.

just curious, why did you choose edinburgh over other universities in the UK? and why the UK? i’m studying abroad in a year, and i’m just getting a consensus of what countries/uni’s are popular.
