UK Housing!

What are the best traditional residence halls at Kentucky? (for a freshman)

Also, is it necessary to pay for a room in the premium residence halls or are the traditional rooms nice enough?

I can’t speak to specific halls (might find info on some of the college review websites with student comments) but
I’d suggest you focus more on where you want to be and what type of amenities you want. If you go to the student life/housing area on UKs website there is a link to a matrix that shows things like - coed, visitation policy, air conditioning, etc. You might also want to pay attention to how many students share a bathroom - can be anywhere from 2 to 30 (you can see floor layouts on the housing website too) Once you are on campus, you’ll be visiting friends and will have an idea where you want to be the next year, or even the 2nd semester if there is availability.

I do know:

South campus is where majority of freshman live. Tends to be more social, louder, etc. I have been in one of the tower dorm rooms - traditional, nice sized. Closer to student parking at stadium, hospitals, rec center, library, commons market.

North campus is more studious, quieter, etc. I think that is because more of the living/learning communities are on North campus. closer to student center, arts buildings, coliseum, bookstore, Blazer cafe.

I have heard that the couple dorms in central campus are not nice at all! but close to hospitals and all main classroom buildings and many of the greek houses. No super-close dining options.

I can’t really specifically say which dorms are better to live in because it all really depends on the individual, but I used this awesome website last year to find my roommate and we are now super close! If you go to this Facebook[/url”>Redirecting...]Facebook page, it can give you more details about the launching of the real website on December 27th!

Here’s my thing on UK housing.

The Blanding and Kirwin complexes and towers are extremely depressing and not ideal places to live. BUT, they house the majority of the students, so the atmosphere is crazy. Which probably distracts from how SMALL (and by small I mean the rooms, hallways, and lobbies, not the actual structures), DARK, AND DEPRESSING the buildings are. I have friends that live in those dorms and say they have fun. I’m guessing it’s because there are so many people.

Patterson Hall is the nicest traditional residence hall in my opinion. My best friend lives there and I’ve stayed with her before. It’s the oldest hall and the bathrooms are extremely out of date, but the rooms and hallways are big. It’s also the Honors Living Learning Community. There’s a huge study area. The building itself is really beautiful. I thought only nerds lived there, but once I met everyone they’re so awesome. Everyone in that dorm is like one big family.

I’ve never seen the inside of a premium dorm, but I don’t think it’d be worth living in one. Especially as a freshman. The majority of underclassmen will live in the Kirwin and Blanding complexes. Also, you have to clean your own bathroom in the premium dorms. Which sucks.
