UK Undergraduate -> US grad school?

<p>Hi, I was wondering if anyone here did their undergrad in the UK and is now (or is in the process of applying to) US grad schools? I've got a few questions, such as;</p>

<ol>
<li>How are class ranks REALLY converted to GPAs? Surely there's a difference depending on the uni? I've been getting 2.1s so far, but these are "unofficial" since they are not my final year grades and I have been predicted a 1st for my final year (which has yet to start!)</li>
<li>How did you get your LORs? British unis have a structure where it is very unlikely that someone who is fit to right a LOR is really going to know you, and even if they do, the letters will be generic at best. How did you get over this?</li>
</ol>

<p>I have other questions too, but these seem to be the most dire ones right now! I would love to just know about your experience in dealing with the differences in applying to the two countries.</p>
