UK Uni Chances?

Hi, I am a British citizen living in the US and i'm looking to apply to uni in the UK

i just finished my junior year of high school

here are my general stats:

AP Computer Science: 5

AP Calc AB: 5 (predicted)
AP Biology: 5 (predicted)
AP Physics C Mechanics: 5 (predicted)
AP Spanish: 3 (predicted)

AP Calc BC: 5 (predicted)

ACT: 35 w/ 36 in science

SAT II: Math 2 750 (predicted)

i am also co captain of the policy debate at my school and a 2013 ohio state finalist and national forensic league national finalist

cumulative GPA: 3.8/4.0 unweighted

using these, what do you think my chances in the UK could be?

I am looking at Oxford, UCL, Imperial, Edinburgh, St andrews, or Kings
for mechanical or chemical engineering or physics or biochemistry

i am also co captain of the policy debate team at my school and a state and national finalist for 2013, i had a research placement at a university, and i did an overseas trip

The British citizen part is relevant only if a) you have been living outside the UK for less than 3 years, because then you will pay UK fees, and/or b) you have done a lot of your schooling in the UK, because then you will have some familiarity with how papers are written/exams done, etc. Otherwise it will not particularly help or hurt you.

Your SAT/ACT scores are fine, so what will matter are your APs. If you look at the course pages for each of the courses you are considering you will see what the standard ‘offer’ is (usually AAA for Oxford, varies for the others) in the relevant subjects. For shorthand, a 5 is considered roughly as an A. All the courses that you mention require an A or A for maths (at Oxford), so you would need a 5 in Calc, and they would probably make your offer conditional on getting that on BC.

As for ECs the only possibly relevant one is the research placement, which could be part of your Personal Statement.

Long story short, if your AP results in July line up with your predicted scores, you should be in a strong position. Go spend some time looking carefully at each course that you are considering at each school- it is time consuming, but it is very tough to find yourself in a course you don’t love. Also, go over to the website the student room and look for American Students Applying to UK universities, Oxford Applicants for 2014 and similar threads for your other unis, where you will find lots of fellow travelers!

(ps, it is a little funny to see a British citizen living in the US making a point of having done an overseas trip…)(yes, I know you probably mean something like community service in Costa Rica, but still…)
