does anybody have any advice on or suggestions for which uk university would be best to study abroad at for a year. i have to rank and narrow my choices to three of these and i am having a hard time ranking them..my choices are uni of sussex, manchester, endinburgh or leeds..

What part of the UK do you want to live in? Sussex is in the south, Manchester and Leeds are in the north and Edinburgh is in Scotland.

Sussex is a campus university next to a (tiny) village called Falmer; all the others are in big cities.

Sussex seems like a bit of an outlier on your list - any particular reason why you included it?

Sussex is very close to Brighton though, which is a very nice English seaside town. But i agree with Laylah, they’re all very different places.

If i were you id list all the things i wanted from my time abroad and rank the universities by how many things on that list they offer. So for example, if you wanted quick and easy travel to London you wouldn’t pick Edinburgh.

i picked sussex becasue i hear that it is beautiful and it is like “london by the sea” and quite an active campus life.

i have narrowed the other choices to leeds and manchester becasue they are big cities and i didnt want to go to school in london. can you guys give me any insight into leeds and/or manchester? although i have researched both, i am having difficutly ranking them becuase i still feel as though i dont know enough about either.

I’ve visited both Leeds and Manchester. They have a lot in common. Good shopping, lots of restaurants, big student populations. The cost of living is much lower than in London.

I’d say that Leeds is probably a bit more ‘regional’ than Manchester - lots of students come from the surrounding area. Manchester tends to attract a more national and international student population, but it’s still nothing like as cosmopolitan as London.

If you want to be by the sea, definitely go for Sussex. Dionysus is right - Sussex is very close to Brighton which is a really lovely place. Brighton can get a bit busy and touristy in summer, and cost of living is inflated because it’s so popular, but it’s very beautiful.

thank you! this was very helpful!

Between Manchester, Leeds and Edinburgh, definitely Edinburgh for it’s history, academia and uniqueness.

It looks like you said you’ve narrowed you choices down to leeds and manchester, but I figured I would throw in my two cents on Edinburgh anyways.

I would have to agree with c-otwa. Edinburgh is definately the place to go. I think you’ll find it very quaint, especially for a city, and the history is unmatched. The architecture is beautiful, and the airport is right in the city for easy travel. Scotland itself is a great country as well. The university is one of Scotlands better universities, and Im sure you’ll be able to find courses in your area of study without a problem.

Im doing a year abroad in Scotland right now, so feel free to ask questions about Scotland, edinburgh, travel, etc.
