Ultimate Dining at the Duc

Now that your students have been home for Fall break, what is their impression of the food service at the Dobbs University Center? My son thinks the quality is pretty bad. Is he being overly critical?

the duc food varies from day to day. one day it will be excellent and the next i will only get a grilled cheese because i cant find anything else. they always have a grill station which is pretty good and there they have hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. there is also always pizza, salad, and a deli station that you cant go wrong with. the other choices, however, are not always the best. the duc isnt the only option though. many people do not realize that meal swips work on the clairmont campus which has great food. the sophomore cafe in woodruff also takes swips and is consistenly good. i think that when you have similar things day after day anything can start to not taste so great. def check out the other options for variety's sake.

I am in the pro-DUC camp, myself.

They serve reasonably healthy food in a buffet style. The food is well prepared. They grill hamburgers, the bread for sandwiches is fresh, and the food is served hot.

The variety is only marginal. More than half of the stations serve the exact same food everday.

Perhaps, I just have low expectations because my mother is a bad cook, and my high school cafeteria food was funded by stingy tax payers.

I'm a freshman at emory, and would agree that the DUC has it's good and bad days. Today, for instance, the only things i deemed suitable for consumption were bread and pasta. On other days, i will get something from like every station and have to make multiple trips from the buffet area to my table. Overall, I'd say the food is pretty poor; the food at the university in my home state was far better, which is something I did not see coming from a 45k per year school. It really annoys me that i can't even get some pasta without it being lathered with butter, but maybe that's a southern thing.

One can always count on a nice deli sandwich or whatever Pasta John is making. :-) Also, as a cereal fan, I love that we can get it any time.

My experience has been very similar to Amadani's. I think, overall, we are getting pretty good food. If you are familiar with campus food rankings, you might have heard of St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. I have friends that go there and have been on campus a couple of times. I'd have to say that our dining does not have nearly the atmosphere, variety, or quantity that they have. Then again, they have one of the best cafeterias in the country. However, is that what we should expect from Emory?

Maybe that is feedback you guys need to give. Now that the various rankings of colleges include how good the food is colleges will pay better attention. I may have said this on another post but one thing that strikes me about Emory is that the administration seems to solicit feedback and take action. So, with regard to library hours and food - speak up! For the amount we are paying - you should pass on constructive feedback. I work at a large corporation and I feel the same way about the food - choices get old, some days there are options, most days its salad bar for me. After touring many, many colleges, I would say the vast majority have mediocre food with Bates and Bowdoin up there on the high end.
