I'm thinking about joining the club sport at my college and was wondering if anyone could share any experiences or knowledge about ultimate. There's two teams- A and B, with B being less competetive and more recreation-based. Practices are twice a week, and it's about 300-400 bucks a year for everything (jerseys, cleats, tournaments, etc). I'm concerned with how time-consuming it is with a full load of classes, working, and clubs. I've never played before but it looks like a ton of fun, although pretty heavy on the running. Any advice?

$300-400 just to throw around a frisbee?!?! At my school, the ultimate frisbee team is more so just a drinking team.

wow 400 bucks? at my high school it's just 15 for dues a season, and 10 dollars for jersey. you dont need cleats to play. iguess it might be different in the university but it's really not a equipment based game at all.

dues at Columbia were $30-40 per semester. We were subsidized by the club sports office though. But I guess the bus rentals to travel to tournaments are a big expense.

Ultimate frisbee is tremendously fun. It's almost as athleticly demanding as playing soccer, almost as strategically complex (in terms of set plays, field space, etc) as basketball, and all you need is a disc. It's not just for hippies anymore.

for that price you're probably better off playing with friends...

I don't play on the club team, but I play with 2 fairly competitive groups of people at least twice a week. The biggest difference is probably that we usually play on a really small field compared to regulation size.

If you are a soccer player, you'll love ultimate frisbee. Ultimate rewards runs off the disc, creating space, using support and good field vision. See http://www.ultimatehandbook.com/uh/basics.html

$300 does seem steep unless transportation costs are very high. As you know, a complete uniform and cleats can be purchased for much less.

Well, I'm in the LA area, so transportation costs are pretty high. It's 40 bucks for dues a quarter (three quarters a year), with 15 bucks a year to the Rec Office, so that's already $55 a quarter, $165/year.

Ultimate does look pretty athletically intense though, so that means I better get back into shape. -_- Thanks for the responses, guys.

Just had my first practice tonight, and it was a ton of fun, although my hamstring is screaming at me now though. I need to get back into shape...and cleats. I was slipping and sliding on that grass like I was on a slip 'n slide. lol
