A David and Goliath battle played itself out in Boulder today as both the men's AND women's squads of one small LAC with 2,000 students did battle with universities enrolling up to 37,000 undergrads alone.

CUT - Carletons Ultimate Frisbee men's team - defeated Dartmouth, UC Santa Cruz, Pitt and Georgia before falling to Florida, the #1 ranked men's squad in the nation, in semi-final play today.

SYZYGY - Carleton's Ultimate Frisbee women's team - defeated Oregon, Northeastern and Michigan State before falling to UCLA, the #1 ranked women's squad in the nation, in quarter-final play.

I've heard that Carlton has something like a 70% participation rate in intramural ultimate frisbee, to the point that individual floors of dorms have their own teams.

Almost everyone at Carleton plays intramurals and Frisbees are everywhere on campus but 70% participation in intramural Frisbee as an estimate still seems pretty unlikely.

The only time Frisbees ever hibernate on campus is in the heart of winter. Broomball takes over - 2 ice rinks are set up for the quarter on the Bald Spot (central quad).

Perhaps the most successful "David" in intercollegiate sports is Trinity College, a LAC with 2200 undergraduates in Hartford, CT. They just won their 10th straight national championship in Men's Squash. Trinity is an NCAA Division III school, but they dominate over the Ivies and all other Division I squash programs (technically, men's squash is not an NCAA sport, so the "Division I" vs. "Division III" distinction is informal).

I'm pretty sure you cant call a team that has won ten straight national championships an underdog...
