i wrote my essay about an issue of local concern and its importance to me; however, it's 658 words, and idk if i can make it shorter without deleting some points that i feel are important. will this affect me at all?

You’re fine. The essay doesn’t matter anyways, unless you’re really borderline or your stats suck and you’ve got some explaining to do…

I think you should cut it down a little, there has to be some way

U of M doesn’t count words, so if your essay is good and everything in it is relevant, then I think you should leave it.

If there’s useless stuff in there though, then yeah, you should cut it down if you can…

I agree, so many people apply that essays probably only make a difference if you are borderline or trying to get into honors.

I tend towards disagreeing here, perhaps only because as a Lit/English applicant, I find the essays a useful platform to demonstrate my writing abilities.

^ True, it’s probably a lot more important for you than most people. On the application rating sheet they use, they have a lot of sections about you showing interests and strengths towards your major, and I’m sure the essay will contribute to that.

For most people though, if you have the numbers, your essay won’t effect you either way. I was actually told by an expert on college admissions that my MSU essay is more important because I have a really good shot at Honors.

^Im applying to MSU honors as well

^ Nice. Honestly though, I don’t plan on attending MSU even if I do get in honors. U of M is a very safe match for me (mostly because of my HS) so I’m most likely going there no matter what. The only thing I’m worried about is my counselor recommendation showing up on WA!!

Same here. If I don’t get into Michigan, ill go to detroit mercy college because they have a 7 year dentistry program and it’ll be cheaper.

I should be a match for Michigan, but you never know…

i’m applying OOS, and one of the things i’m lacking in my application is leadership. the only leadership position i have is a chairperson for a club. when i talked about how the issue is important to me, i was able to give examples of how i have been a leader in the community. that’s why i don’t really want to take out anything from my essay because i don’t want UM to not think i’m a leader. so do you think i will be okay with 658 words?

Yeah, you’ll be fine…They aren’t going to reject you because your essay is too long…
