Hey everyone..im an upcoming freshman who will be majoring in chemical engineering..in high school..i have been very involved with student council, even serving as this year's student body president. I am very interested in continuing my involvement in student council in college, and after looking at the website, i felt as though michigan's central student government would be perfect for me..i was just wondering if anyone has any experience with the central student govt. or if anyone knows anything about it.such as how competitive it is and what not..i would be looking to hold one of the six elected positions within the executive branch my junior or senior year

thanks in advance!

for engineering CSG isn’t all too competitive. that said, it definitely helps to know a lot of people, and you’ll have to do a bit of campaigning. the last elections had about 15 people running for 6 spots, but not everybody is incredibly motivated to campaign. additionally, running with a party makes it significantly easier to win due to other party members telling friends to vote for the entire slate rather than just for you. there is also no real need to wait until junior or senior year, a great number of people run as freshman and still get make it as a student rep.

why would CSG be less competitive for an engineer? and you can run with a party? that sounds good…and i am talking about holding a position within the entire CSG junior or senior year…such as President VP Treasurer CHief of Staff etc

treasurer, chief of staff etc. are not elected positions, they are appointed by the president and vp (just like real government). csg is less competitive for an engineer because there are far less people running, for example 65 people ran for 20 lsa positions this cycle, while about 15 ran for 7 spots in engineering. engineering students also generally are caught up in their studies, and so they care less about university politics. you can absolutely run with a party, although i’m not sure what the situation will be regarding those next year (this year’s top vote-getter for president ran as an independent candidate).

i thought there was only one CSG…ur telling me there are individual CSGs for each school?

no, there is one central student government. however, within this there are different representative spots for each college. engineering has seven. lsa has 20. 15 people ran for the seven engineering spots this election. over 60 ran for the 20 lsa spots. this is why it is easier to be a rep from engineering. if you would like to have a higher up position junior or senior year, it would be beneficial for you to run as a representative and be one during your sophomore year, this way you can meet people who are potentially running for president and when interviewing for cabinet positions will be able to show your qualifications.

oh okay thank you very much for the clarification and the recommendation!
