I kind of have a problem with this though:
I’m an in state student (i live in MI, was born in MI, attend a highschool in MI, and both my parents work in MI!) yet my residency status changed from pending to out of state.

I’m really worried that this will greatly reduce my chances of getting in (U of M would be a reach for me if i lived out of state) and that there’s a possibility that they’ve rejected me while considering me as an OOS student. I’m filling the “Application for Resident Classification…” ASAP (sending on monday). Any advice? do you think they’d reconsider (if they made a rejection decision) once I prove that i’m in state?

I have several friends whose kid’s residency status showed out of state when it should have shown in-state. Fill out the form, send it in right away, and they should change it. I seems like a common mistake that admissions has been making.

I don’t think that the residency status thing really affects admissions in terms of being an in-state / oos student ;if you go to a High School in Michigan and your parents work here etc., I’m pretty sure the admission committee would look at your file thinking this is a Michigan kid. Where the residency status matters is in tuition - either paying is v oos.

“No…I asked via email and was told it doesn’t mean anything other than they’ve verified residency status.”

Well, of course they’re going to say this. They don’t want this notion of in state=acceptance to become widespread if it’s indeed the case that this is only verified upon acceptance.

@ umich8790 and aliofarabia: thanks! it’s good to know i’m not the only one with confused residency and i hope you’re right about the (lack of) effect on admissions

Did anyone know how long it take to approve residency after giving all documents they need ?
I am transfer student and i submitted Application for Resident Classification in dec 1st so how long it take ?

Admitted in College of Engineering (winter 2011).

1goblue1 - answer to your question is FOREVER if my son’s experience is normal. Residency qualification application sent in August, and still no answer. I have called several times, and yet here we are still waiting.

Son’s status is “In-State.” Was initially “Pending Verification,” or something similar. His status was changed to In-State quite a while ago (a few weeks).
