UM Fans say new Ross building is ugly?

The Victors Message Board

I haven't even been over there to see it. I hate Hill--too many 4-way stops.

I loathe the Executive Education building, although I think it's a Lukenbach Ziegelman building and I generally like their work a lot.

I walked by it most days last year on my way to/from campus. It looks like it's going to be fairly hideous.

I actually think business school is going to look unique.

But I don't think it is going to have the "WOW" factor like the law school.

I think it's beautiful. Modern, yes. But beautiful.

Like collegebound said, it's not going to look like the law school, but they ARE two entirely different architectural styles...

Words like "hideous" and "ugly" do not fit. Like the University Hospital, the Ross building is not intended to be "pretty" or "beautiful", it is intended to impress, and it will. But then again, who wants their Business school to look "cute" or "pretty"? Get real people, Business buildings are supposed to look modern, cutting edge, practical and industrial. I think the design is perfect for the Business program.

In the end, when the building is done, it will be one the best facilities dedicated to Business education in the world. The interior design and facilities of the Ross Building are groundbreaking and world class...as can be expected of the most expensive Business building on Earth. Most schools spend $20 million - $50 million on their Business facilities. Michigan spend $150 million. I doubt many Business programs will be housed in edifices that can come close to competing with the new Ross building, let alone besting it.

Personally, I don't care what's inside, because I'm never going to go inside. I will have to look at it as I walk by, and it would be nice if they chose something less offensive to the eye than a drab shade of orange.

I only saw the designs, but to me the building looks amazing.

The designs make most of it look like brick, which would be fine. It's actually metal that's painted a color somewhat close to what brick look like if it were a uniform color.

I love modern styled buildings. It just has that spunk.

Why can I find picture of the real building? All I've seen so far are architectural sketches and building under construction.

Ewww...that color's going to look weird in the corner of Martha Cook and the Law School.

Christine, red and glass will go fine with the surrounding buildings. Only the Law School is of a different color. The schools of Social Work Education, Lorch and Martha Cook are all red brick if memory serves.

The Ross building isn't red brick, it's metal that has a similar color. It looks very different.

Although I didn't see it, several architecs and designers I know have and they told me that it is one of the most amazing academic structures they have seen. I know it isn't pretty, and I am glad it isn't. Pretty and MBA don't go together. But I am sure it is well designed and in-keeping with the space around it. To say that it is completely different or ugly seems like a very negative take on what is certain to be the envy of the MBA world. I hope that a university did not invest $150 million on an edifuce that is nasty or out-of-place. Are you telling me the university completely screwed up and should restart the project? I cannot understand where this negativity is coming from. Every single construction project undertaken by the University of Michigan over the last 20 years has been a winner. I would be shocked if they messed this one up.

150 mil isn't going to be ugly, but michigan's different from other schools in that the overall architectural makeup is eclectic, every building is different.

"I hope that a university did not invest $150 million on an edifuce that is nasty or out-of-place."

We let the halo around Michigan Stadium happen, it wouldn't surprise me.

Alexandre, don't tell me you liked the Halo?!?

I never saw the Halo. It was there for a couple of years and I was fortunate not to visit the US at the time. However, I did hear that it was ugly. But the halo is not a building. I was referring to actual buildings.
