hi.

is Cornell in the middle of nowhere?

there are plenty of topics in the cornell forum about this and what to do in ithaca.

those are only some of the topics. jsut search around and you will find your answers.

happy hunting!

Do a search before asking a stupid question next time. There are already about a million threads on this.

it’s not a stupid question…yes it has been asked a bunch of times on this forum (not as much as STUPID chance threads though)

it’s not really that ithaca is in the middle of nowhere (it has a decent mall, good restaurants and a good mix of people)

what is a problem is that it is difficult (and EXPENSIVE) to travel in and out of ithaca…

It’s all relative, where are you coming from?

In my opinion Ithaca is about the perfect size for a college town, but yeah, it sort of is in the middle of nowhere.

your real problem would arise if you think that Syracuse is also in the middle of nowhere.

i live in houston, 5 million people.

Yeah, it’s the boondocks (something like 30,000 people) and the closest real city would be Rochester (about an hour and a half away).

A beautiful area though, and NYC isn’t ridiculously far if you need your fix of cement, pigeons, and hobos.

its very very rural, but I like it like that. I’ve lived in the center of manhattan for my whole life and I was really worried about cornell’s setting, but I don’t have a problem with it. Since there’s nothing around, the campus life is really strong. It’s nice having all the parties on campus rather than everyone dispersing throughout a city because feel a strong sense of community. There’s something really cool about running into your TA or the cute guy you always notice in the row ahead of you in class or the girls that always eat dinner at the table next to you at a party. Even better is when you drunkenly introduce yourself because you’ve lost all inhibitions and then actually start sitting with them in class or dinner.

A few things about the rural setting take some getting used to, but they’re not such a big deal. The shopping is basically non existent, so you end up doing a lot of online shopping and shopping over breaks (now that I know what I like to wear at college I bought about 15 dresses this weekend). There are a few salons in Ithaca, but I get nervous about random people doing my hair so I have to wait for breaks for cuts. I also wish there was a decent nail place in the area. In general though, I definitely wouldn’t trade the amazing experience I’m having at cornell for anything.

are the girls cute?

Most of Cornell is made up of out of staters (lots of Asians, and quite a mix), so I think the girls would be as cute, or as uncute, as any other college. That being said, the local girls are cute. Girls from New York in general are more down to earth and intelligent than anywhere else I’ve lived, and this is cute to me. This could be because I grew up in NY, and I can’t handle a lot of brogues (southern/western/cali/NJ…they are a pretty quick turn off for me).

Yeah I like girls who are down-to-earth and intelligent, but also have a kind personality. If they’re not smoking hot, those qualities definitely make up for a significant amount of it. If you want jaw-dropping beauties, go to ASU or UMiami or something.

btw, Syracuse is closer than Rochester and although both of them are somewhat lame I’d say they both also qualify as “real cities.”

Yeah, you’re right, though Syracuse is a dump.

What’s wrong with Syracuse?

Syracuse and Rochester really dont matter for us who come from outside of this area…the only business I’ve had in Syracuse was coming to and from their airport (bc sometimes Ithaca airport is more than twice as expensive)!

I’m from the Houston area as well and be forewarned that upstate NY is nothing like Houston in terms of booming economy and other activities.

I think the price to get a Cornell education for those of us who come from far as Texas and California and maybe the mid-west is that it is relatively hard to fly in and out of the area. Since you’re from Texas expect things to be a bit more expensive here.

The girls here got a C according to CollegeConfidential but if you’re interested in Asians then you’ll be ok. Long Island and NYC chicks are a turn off for me.

What other schools are you applying to my fellow Houstonian?

“What’s wrong with Syracuse?”

Have you been?

Honestly, it has been years since I’ve been downtown so maybe I’ve forgotten some Syracuse charm that resides there, but last year when I visited ESF/Syracuse University I was disgusted as the state of the area. Very depressed, and dirty (air and streets). Lots of factories and abandoned buildings with graffiti.

and just what is wrong with Long Island/NYC girls?

I wouldn’t say we’re any prettier than girls from other parts of the U.S.A, but on average, we’re less likely to be fat :)
