Hello, this is my first post at cc so please be gentle. XD

I was accepted off the wait list for the music school as a pianist today via e-mail and I'm totally psyched. But I have some inquiries:

I've been playing piano for 12 years and I like it very much so, but I'm having doubts. If I go to UM Music school but do not want to pursue music anymore (personal reasons), am I screwed? Would I be able to transfer to a different major such as (off the top of my head) history? Or does this mean I'm stuck being a music major for my undergraduate years.

Thank you for your help.

The music school is incredibly difficult to get into, from what I've heard. The LSA is the "base," so you can pretty much go from the other schools to the LSA (just not the other way around).

Besides, you can always change from BM to BMA with an outside concentration.

Thank you for your responses.

redhare317: Was there ever an occurrence where a student from another school got rejected to LSA? Is it a pretty much a guaranteed transfer from another school?

pointegirl: I was accepted to the music school with the degree: Performance:Piano BMus. I'm not very good with the technicals so I'm assuming thats short for a BM. Is the transfer to the BMA (assuming its bachelor music of arts?) easy? What to do you mean by outside concentration (minor?) ?

Thanks again.

Check out the link: http://www.music.umich.edu/departments/piano/bma.htm for detail on BMA degree. I imagine it will be more difficult to switch from BMA to BM, and easier from BM to BMA. Other schools (e.g. Rice BFA in music) have similar options for music students who changed their mind and desired less intense music study.
