UM or USC??

I'm a freshman at UM, but i'm thinking about trying to transfer to USC next year. My major is math, but it will probably change soon. I'm from Colorado so a big reason would be the proximity to home. I love the diversity of UM, and I know that USC is much less diverse/more preppy. I just need some insight about USC...and is a degree from USC more valuable than one from UM?
Thank you :)

M = ? (Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana)
SC = ? (Southern California, South Carolina)

oops University of Miami and University of Southern Cal

Hi skhalafi. I can tell you right now that a degree from USC is going to probably look better than one from Miami merely because USC is ranked within the top thirty universities in the U.S., and Miami is ranked within the top fifty. Plus, USC has been working to increase their national standing, and my guess is, in a few years, that USC degree is going to look even better than it does now. That being said, you should also look at how they rank in terms of your major, what courses they both offer, the professors each university has (I’m assuming you already know the professors at Miami, but look up the ones at USC, see if they’re doing anything that interests you), the requirements you’d have to fulfill at each (for your major and GE), etc.

Also, I should warn you that although the USC vibe is really great, they’re location isn’t ideal. You should ask some USC students on this site what they think of the school, its students/faculty, its environment and its location. All of my friends who go there absolutely love it, but there were elements that took some getting used to (ex/ location is smack-dab in the middle of a ghetto, huge greek life, emphasis on sports, lack of ethnic diversity, etc.)

why transfer? u of m is a great school! are you having issues?
usc will not look better on a resume then u of m. nobody in hr really cares and it is not like the school is any better the u of m. some silly usnews list is of zero value!

I may be biased, but it’s even more expensive to live in Cali than Miami. I see no distinct advantage to transferring, so I’d say to stay put at UM.

And … GO CANES! []_[]

I have to agree with zobroward – the ranks shouldn’t be the main reason you want to change schools.

miami a great school why transfer!! the 305 is awesome

Ok, take this one step at a time:

-Math to what? Reason? Does USC offer a stratospherically better program in your new intended major?

Proximity: Colorado is still quite a ways from LA. Direct flight to Denver? Yes but that still doesn’t mean you will have the time to take it…Are you homesick?

Cost: How much merit money is UM providing? Can USC match it? Who is going to foot the relocation bill? Parents? Student loans?

Speaking of Parents: What is their input?

The USC area is sort of a melting pot. Large represented races include Asians, Hispanics, Indians, and Caucasians. I’m sure there are plenty of other races too however.

USC also has the fourth highest economic diversity of any university (second among private universities.)

Fun fact: It’s crosstown rival has the highest economic diversity among elite schools ;)

beyphy…usc is in a terrible area.
and fyi there are only three races and hispanic is not one of them.it is not even an ethnic background. hispanics can be of any race.

Wouldn’t that be among “top 25 USNWR ranked national universities”, not “any university”?

i’m not homesick at all but i have lots of family in cali and it’s just very expensive to fly back and forth to miami. also i’m paying full tuition at UM…do you think I would possibly be able to get a grant or scholarship at USC?

My mistake. I meant to put among ‘elite schools’ (as US NEWS calls their top 25)
