UM, UCBerkeley, or McGill?

I've been accepted to Michigan and McGill and am waiting for a UCBerkeley decision. I'm torn over where I should go. Any thoughts to help me decide?

The one that offers the best aid.

Odin, chances are Kate comes from the DC area, which means she will probably get in-state tuition at Cal and Michigan and McGill is already relatively cheap. At any rate, finances are an important part of the decision, so your point is key.

Kate, you are asking us to chose between watching Casablanca, Pulp Fiction and Finding Nemo...or between working at Cisco, Novartis and Goldman sachs. All the choices are awesome, but they are significantly different and a good answer depends largely on personal preference and mood.

The three schools you are considering have a few things in common. They are all huge, globally recognized, research-oriented universities located in great cities. That's about the only thing they have in common. In most respects, those universities are totally different.

So, maybe you can tell us what you want to major in, the sort of career you think you will want to embark upon when you graduate, the sort of graduate program (if any) you may wish to pursue in the future, the type of setting you prefer and, most important of all, your idea of a fun time.

Finding Nemo is that good?

I would recommend Cal, unless you wanna go to a B-School. Cal is slightly better than Michigan in almost every area except undegraduate business and athletics. Also, think about the weather. If weather's not a big issue and if Michigan gives you more money, than I would probably suggest Michigan.

Berkeley and Michigan are pretty neck and neck in business.

I know the weather is a big factor for me. I've lived in the midwest all my life and the last few years in Michigan...I absolutely hate the winters. My brother goes to school in California and obviously gets to enjoy the good weather.

AzureK, academically, Cal and Michigan are pretty equal in all fields except for the hard sciences like Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In Engineering, Cal has a slight but insignificant edge, in Business Michigan has a slight but insignificant edge, in most of the humanities and social sciences, those two schools are in a dead heat (both are considered among the top 5 or 6 universities in the US when it comes to the social sciences and humanities). Overall, Cal has a slight edge (primarily because of Cal's supremacy in the hard sciences), but again, it is insignificant.

I would recommend the OP pick a school based on fit. Some people love Cal but others hate it. Cal is a very extreme university. Michigan is more well rounded when it comes to campus environment.

OBrien, I personally love animated movies. Bambi, Pinocchio and Snow White are my 3 favorite animated movies, but Finding Nemo and Spirited Away are up there too. Yeah, I am a movie geek! LOL!

lol but CAl is 96% instate u dont see many kids from OOS or outside the country...that stinks

I personally like the Lion King the most. Best Disney movie ever!

Finding Nemo was pretty good too.

Cal for sciences (esp. chemistry), Michigan for business, either for engineering

BERKELEY is a kissass school~~~~~~~~
i wanna goto berkeley too;

alexandre, can you clarify? you get instate tuition coming from dc? what?

Good call Alexandre. Oh yeah, Cal has a LOT of Asians which is one of the reasons why I turned it down.

Lol turned down a school because it has a lot of Asians? What's so bad about Asians?

Nothing, I'm Korean myself but I'm not really a fan of the typical East-Asian scene. I probably should have said this in my last post so I didn't wouldn't come off as racist.

I am planning on majoring in chemistry and would like to do research in the future. I love nature and the outdoors and cold weather is fine with me. I also have a passion for world politics and business and am not much of an athelete. I am not interested in the frat scene and am not from DC, by the way, I'm from Westchester, NY.

Jeffl, DC residents get to attend any state university in the country as in-state students. Pretty cool eh?! The reasoning behind it is quite simple really. DC isn't a state and as such, it doesn't have a sate school of its own. So, to make up for that, DC residents can attend most public universities around the nation at in-state tuition.

But that doesn't matter since Kate is from NY. Kate, in terms of Chemistry, Cal is #1 in the World, so it is hard to pass them up. However, you really should visit the three schools and see which one suits you best. You can get an excellent undergraduate at all three, but being happy is an important part of the undergraduate experience, so go for fit.

Cal has their own College of Chemistry, which just shows how much attention they give to their chem dept. I heard they have some of the world's best faculty.
