I have been accepted to the University of Miami for motion pictures and the University of Florida for film studies. Which program is better?

Bump

Neither of those schools makes The Hollywood Reporter’s Top 25 Film School list, but interestingly, Florida State does.

Bump, people the two choices are UM & UF. FSU is not in the equation!

bump

@MrMom62
Thanks for answering his question!

Why thank you - I think.

The Hollywood Reporter list is about the only film school list out there that I know about, or at least it’s the most respected - anything beyond that is pure guesswork or would require someone with direct experience, which from the deafening silence you can see no one has.

My answer, restated another way, would be for OP to apply to FSU if they want to go to a more recognized film school. Deadline is Jan. 14. Other than that, you’re on your own.

I don’t think it really matters. Getting into that business is a matter of getting good a writing and learning some of the liberal arts subjects to give yourself some frames of reference for things, hopefully getting access to some equipment and getting some basics, the all self motivated learning and hustling for jobs. So just go to the one that you like the best that you can afford.

People… simple freaking question. UM or UF? There is no “I reject the two possible answers and insert my third unhelpful one instead”. Thanks :-/

Now you’re just being annoying. Flip a coin! Go to the cheaper one! Throw darts! Go to the school you like better! The one with the hotter girls/guys! The one with the better parties! The one with the better beach! Grow a pair and make a choice!

@MrMom62, thank you for you suggestions but I am just not finding them useful. Does anybody else have any input? Thanks in advance.

Well, MrMom did have some decent suggestions. You need to do a bit more research on your own to decide.

UF is a great school (I prefer it over UM for many reasons, one being cost) But have no idea about the film studies program.

What do you want to do specifically? The motion picture program at UM seems more into the actual making movies than the more generic UF film studies from what I see on their websites. But hard to tell.
Look up the facilities/equipment/faculty that each program offers.
If you find some e-mail contacts–ask directly.
Look at the courses you would take and see if they appear to meet your needs. They are on the sites.
See if you can find a forum of students in those programs–that would be where you could ask your questions and get better answers.

I am not sure what aspect of film I want to involved in. Right now, I make internet videos and have many many many subscribers, followers, likes. I want to make a business off of online video content production so that is my goal. Does that help?

If I were you and could afford UM (very expensive private)–I would go back and expand my list of schools starting with the list of top film schools as suggested above. Throw Full Sail in the mix (great facilities–I’ve dissed it for CA but know film grads that have done well–expensive but not over UM) if you want to stay in FL. Or Ringling in Sarasota. If money is an issue then UM is probably not on your list at the end of the day and UF is the school to go to.

Brownparent is very right-- the film making business is all about self-motivation and hustle to make a living at it–otherwise it’s a good hobby where most grads dwell. The business is about making contacts and networking so it is important to go to the top schools where you meet the people that hopefully will be in the industry. I don’t say that to be discouraging–it’s just a fact of life. Look up some old posts from taxguy on the subject.

It is too late to apply to other schools, UM and UF are my only two film options. LOL, money is not an issue.

Many of these schools have rolling admissions for film. It may be worth your while to check it out other possibilities.

Yes, admissions is still open at many, many schools on THR Top 25 list. In fact, it’s probably open at almost in not all of them for Fall 2015. If money is no object, apply to a few - you have your safeties already.

I am going to ask one last time and then basically this thread will die. UM or UF. All I want people is to just post where they think would be better for film producing! Thanks.

I’d go with Miami, if only because I couldn’t see living in Gainesville for four years.
