um, weird

I was going through a list of colleges that are members of collegeboard, and I found some weird names of colleges. Such as:

California University of Pennsylvania

Cornell College (as opposed to Cornell University)

Why would someone name a college with a similar name as a prestigious institution? It makes them sound like they're trying to leech off of another school's reputation.

Cornell College (named after a business tycoon that donated a lot in its early days) existed before Cornell University was founded (named after an unrelated Cornell that was one of its founders). California U of PA (founded 1853) is simply named after the town it is in, which had been named earlier by residents in honor of those who went to California for gold. The similar name question usually has answers like that.
