Um... What exactly is a 4.5 UNweighted GPA?

Hey yall, so I was looking up requirements for a program (not applying to colleges this year) and I saw this on a website:
“… and you must be in the top 5% of your class and/or have a minimum of a 4.5 or 95% unweighted GPA fo consideration.” Is there something I’m misunderstanding? How can UW GPA be above 4.0?

Maybe it’s a typo? Not sure though.

An UW on a 4.0 scale could maybe be a 4.33 (some schools give 4.33 for an A+). I suppose it could be a 5.0 scale (some high schools use them), but that does not match the 95%. You could email th program and ask.

thanks @intparent @azwu331 i emailed them… it also said the average uw gpa of a student who was accepted was 100.5%???

Well… sounds like straight As are the norm. What is the program?

TCNJ’s 7 Year BSMD Program… I’ve seen people on CC say they got in with 3.9ish gpas, and my gurrent gpa is a 3.93 so I wanted to see how I stack up, and if I’m even allowed to apply

You will need to ask them.

I am guessing it’s a typo and they meant weighted.

I would agree. Above 95% UW and in the top 5% of your class sounds more realistic.

@mamaedefamilia what is a 95% on a 4.0 scale? isn’t that just a 4.0? I wouldn’t think they would restrict the program to only kids with a 4.0 and on TOP of that choose a select few (and I know a girl who made it with a 3.91).

It depends on how the school reports. If the school reports numerical grades, and an applicant takes 6 courses per semester, by the end of junior year, he could have 35 100’s and an 80, and still have a 95 average, but not a 4.0.

Even that does not make sense; there is no standard that all HS’s follow for weighting classes; my HS, for instance, did not weight at all.

I think this is the definitive answer - everything else is just a guess.
