um yeah so i fail at math 1b... p/np?

hey guys

so i got a 5 on calc bc junior year but decided not to skip to 53 and take math 1b for "review" purposes

i just got my second midterm back :( and calculated my grade in the class to be about a 75 without any curves at all. I know i would probably be able to get like a B/B+... but there's no harm in making it pass/no pass right?

potential majors: business/econ/poli-sci

no harm for sure, if those are your potentail majors. it'd be beneficial to take the class for a grade to keep your options open though...

but does it really close any options?

5 on BC means that i can still take 53 next semester...

Econ requires two semesters of math.
Does the BC exam still satisfy that if you're taking 1B right now?
Is it looked down upon to do P/NP?

Even if you can take 53 next semester, theoretically, it'd be harder than 1B since it's the next level.

do you live in ida sproul?

I'm kinda in the same boat here, not doing good as OP.

I have four classes right now, but I already switched my AC class to P/NP, and i have a P/NP seminar.

My potential majors are the same as OP.

Is it bad to take three classes P/NP one semester?

You really should speak to a counselor about this ASAP.

For business, 1 semester of math (1a, 1b, 16a, 16b) is a pre-req. For econ, 2 semesters (1a + 1b, 16a+16b) is required. Since you already passed the Calc BC test, I think you may have already satisfied this pre-req. However, I would want to be absolutely sure before changing it to P/NP, if I were you. Remember, pre-reqs MUST be taken for a letter grade.

Either way, for those majors there is no reason to take Math 53. If you are doing badly in Math 1b, you may want to consider not taking any more math classes.

flutterfly_28, your 5 on Calc BC exempts you from the math requirement for both business and econ, depending on which you do. So, it's completely fine to take Math 1B P/NP. As an Econ major myself who skipped out of 1A/1B because of a 5 on BC, I would still encourage you to take Math 53 and 54.

I have a question about 53 and 54.

Do you need 53 to take 54?

I heard that the difficulty in 54 is very random.

@wtat264: No you don't. People that can't get into 53 in the fall usually take 54, and then 53 during spring.

Thanks Def890!
I'll talk to an advisor anyway though.
wow feeling so much better about the semester already :)

castel, do you live in ida sproul? lol... are you on my floor or something

^ lawls. i live in preistley.

OMG castel! HAHA your roommate just told me who you are ;)
wow you totally chanced me and stuff wayy back when
lol do you know who i am?

Well, yeah. There's like only one or two biz/econ/polisci people on my floor. :)
