UMaine accepted chance for honors college and merit

Yes, I looked at it. Seems a little unclear to me. Going to give UMaine a call. Pretty exciting and I think he was really surprised about the Scholarship. Hoping he ends up at UMaine.

Agreed that it seems like a terrific school. I was looking on the website and noticed for many of the engineering majors (e.g. mechanical, electrical) that it also offered majors in engineering technology (mechanical engineering technology etc.) This is really terrific for students. Too often, kids start out in engineering, but if they run into problems in the tougher math courses, they have to drop the major and choose something unrelated like business or psychology or whatnot. But these engineering technology majors allow them a path to stay in the same general field, just with less math and more hands-on learning. Engineering technology degrees qualify graduates for some really good jobs, with good pay. Really it is a terrific safety net, and I donā€™t know why more schools donā€™t offer this path.

Thanks for the information. Will mention and have him research the engineering technology major.

Hello,

My daughter was also admitted this week and received a Presidential Award. The package mentioned federal loans she also qualified for, but said nothing about the Flagship Match or Work Study. Iā€™m guessing that she received the Presidential scholarship in lieu of the Flagship Match scholarship since it is a bit higher than a Match scholarship would be, but I donā€™t know for sure. I plan to contact them next week to get a better understanding. Please let me know if you hear, and congrats to your student!

Weā€™re still waiting for scholarship infoā€¦

My D23ā€™s scholarship info was in her portal. Yay! She always liked UMaine and this keeps it in the running.

D23 accepted with the full NMSF scholarship! Sheā€™s very excited as it has pretty much everything a marine science major could want but Iā€™m a little worried about the weather and distance from home (weā€™re in SC).

Very interested in hearing feedback from those who have visits planned!!

Congratulations! Thatā€™s wonderful!!
Is your daughter considering other Northeast schools? My two cents:
I wouldnā€™t think of winter in Maine as all that different than winter in any Northeast place, especially coming from SC.
Orono is more coastal than mountainous. That means a very nice fall.
My daughter is a freshman. The fall semester was beautiful. Hot at first, and fairly mild through December- pretty typical New England coastal weather.
The spring semester will be ā€œwinterā€- norā€™easters are what we get in ā€œspringā€ā€¦ harsh winter storms powered by the warmer ocean. Typically, coastal New England is cool and damp from around Jan-April.
We visited mid-Feb last yearā€¦ a very cold sunny day, then it snowed that night we were there. We were in Bangor- the roads were taken care of swiftly, restaurants stayed open- the city was basically operational and people unfazed, and was very beautiful!
The distance from home ā€” well what makes UMaine a great choice is the fact that Bangor has a legit airport so itā€™s easy for traveling- not always the case with many schools and IMO very valuable! Good luck!!

Thank you! This is great feedback. They did adjust my daughterā€™s scholarship for NMSF so it is definitely in the running for her.

What did you ask when you called? The same happened to me, Iā€™m NMSF but am supposed to pay over 26k per year.

I asked them if there was a mistake because she is a NMSF. The admissions person was very forthcoming that it was an error. I made sure to be very polite and acknowledge the generosity of the original offer before I asked the question. It might have taken a couple weeks before the correction was acknowledged via U.S. mail.
