Yes, me too. Did you ALL receive emails before your decisions were in?
For people who heard back- did you get an email? I agree with what @ezbreezy8022 said. I rather check when I know my decision will be there.
@tagreen348 yes I got an email saying my portal was updated
My son was accepted yesterday, Building and Construction Technology. 1130 SAT, 3.25 GPA, no AP classes. In-state, no merit. Average students can get in too. He is beyond excited.
My D’s decision was in before the email came, but you’re wise to wait for the email. It’s only a matter of a few hours if they come out backwards. Try to enjoy your day.
Son was admitted to sports management program in Isenberg biz school
In state
GPA weighted 4.58 unw 4.05
5/300
SAT 1380
No CHC
no merit
@ezbreezy8022 @tagreen348 I didn’t get any email. It just showed up.
Daughter admitted to the School of Public Health; OSS $12,000 merit but no Honors College. 4.43 weighted gpa and 31 ACT.
@mankind1234 I’m also an intended pre-med major at the honors college. Did you receive anything regarding your financial aid package? I haven’t yet so I’m worried I’m not getting any money.
BTW, CHC students don’t get any additional money? Usually honors college programs provide additional financial aid packages…
Are there any students who applied EA but did NOT apply to one of the more competitive majors (Business, Engineering, Computer Science, or Nursing) and also did not hear about acceptance yet? My son applied EA, for environmental science, but has not heard back. Is that normal?
Accepted into Commonwealth Honors College with Biology major and Dean’s Scholarship 4.1 GPA 6 APs 2000 SAT Massachusetts Resident, Top 10% of Class
@elise303 Yes, my son applied EA for English or History major. He hasn’t heard, yet. We are OOS.
Also, his counselor didn’t turn in her part until Nov. 21st. She called U Mass and was told he wouldn’t be penalized. I’m thinking that was late, so maybe that’s why there’s no decision, yet. Did anyone have a similar situation with late credentials, but got in?
@elise303 I was accepted EA for environmental science yesterday. I got an email that my portal had updated.
My OOS kid applied EA to business, received email on Friday, accepted with $14,000 merit.
(also, for those who haven’t received decisions, please see post #11 in this thread. )
Accepted into history major EA with $10,000 Chancellor’s Award. OOS, 3.19 UW 3.57 W GPA (upward trend. Straight As junior year), 5 APs (9 including senior year), 28 ACT. Goes to show that students with average stats can get into good schools. I’m so incredibly happy
My daughter accepted but not into CHC. No merit. She is disappointed. Weighted GPA 4.3, # 7/350 class rank, new SAT 1400, 30 ACT, 1AP Jr yr, 3 APs (incl BC Calc) this year. Lots of ECs: Jazz pand, pit band, NHS, dance, asst mgr at Subway, volunteer work, etc…Does anyone know if there are simply too many qualified students applying so that many are randomly denied into CHC? She is afraid she won’t get in to her top choices.
To blackhawkmom - we had similar experience to you - our D is #7 in class, excellent GPA, solid ACT and SATs (she got 30 also, perhaps not good enough??), lots of ECs, and we don’t understand why she was not invited into CHC or any merit at all. Is UMass flooded with Ivy-league type applicants this year??? Makes no sense !!
I think that they must have weighed high SAT scores more heavily, perhaps academic rigor. My daughter’s GPA and rank were not so great, only 25th%, but she had very good SATs (780/710), and took virtually all honors all the way through, 1 AP soph yr, 3 APs junior year, virtually all APs or college courses senior year. Also had superb recommendations, the kind that said, “Most precocious student I’ve ever had”. Founded the high school club in her field of obsession, 3 season athlete all the way through (though not a geat one), jazz band, some extracurriculars. She got honors college and max merit aid, which, frankly, surprised me greatly. She is not an URM, nor a legacy. She is OOS. Frankly, I think that the best indicator of college achievement is the high school GPA, not the SAT, but I guess they have a formula. Britlass, are you sure you didn’t miss the popup? We did, when we first looked at the acceptance. I can’t believe she didn’t get into CHC. If she goes, and does well, she can transfer in.
I don’t think there’s a good formula for CHC. Neither of my children made it in and their grades, stats, rank, and EC’s are as good or better than several here who did. Maybe they have a certain number of spots per major? But it seems kind of random and unfortunate for kids like mine, who are qualified but then left to wonder why they weren’t chosen. It kind of crushes the confidence needlessly, and my older child decided NOT to go to UMAss because she felt like “they didn’t really want her since she didn’t get into CHC.” That isn’t really true (the process is very impersonal) but it feels personal when you’ve worked so hard and you’re 17 and your friend with the exact same stats got in and you didn’t.
Then last year they accepted too many kids to CHC and they didn’t all get the special housing. I wish they’d make a hard cut off like 32 ACT/3.8 UW GPA plus a CHC application essay, and tell you "we have 100 spots for business majors, 100 spots for pre-meds, etc. At least then you’d know what your chances were…
But even better— ROLL OUT THE OPTION OF 2 SMALLER CLASSES TO THE ENTIRE POPULATION (with special honors sections for CHC). Other big state U’s do this. Why not UMASS?
