just noting for posterity that personal achievements and stuff beyond stats seem to be very important for the merit scholarships!
leading up to the EA deadline, I spent most of time and effort on my MIT application (and got accepted), but my Common App was pretty subpar - my essay had typos and I listed way too many fluff activities
I did receive the Dean’s scholarship for UMass Amherst, for which I’m super grateful, but I objectively (as objective as I can be anyway) think I could have gotten a higher merit scholarship had I polished my application more - the stats weren’t enough. hope this helps applicants in the future
me too
UMass Amherst’s decision notification process put me through hell. I applied RD exploratory track, in state with a 3.8 GPA & 1300 SAT score. UMass was my safety & I was waitlisted. First of all, if you’re an in state applicant, apply EA if you want to even be considered. Every in state applicant I know who applied RD or was deferred to RD was either waitlisted or rejected. A common assumption throughout my school was that UMass filled up their entire freshman class too soon w/ EA applicants, enough so to not even consider the majority of (particularly in state) RD applicants. It goes to show how unorganized this system is and how it negatively affects the university. Secondly, whether they like to admit it or not, UMass’ decision notifications ARE based on your acceptance, or rather, lack thereof. Decisions do go out in waves, depending on location & major. Acceptances come out first. Everyone from a particular area who whether it be a county of MA or different state, who shares a major will be notified of their acceptance at the same exact time. If you’re not notified, especially for days/weeks after this period, you’ve most likely been deferred/waitlisted or rejected. The acceptance process goes on for about a month, in incriments of time depending on major & location. It was absolute torture to the students who hadn’t heard yet. Then, at the literal last moment possible, all of the waitlists & rejections are released at once. Everyone got the waitlist/rejection email at the same exact time. Considering all of my friends who got the same update notification email as me were waitlisted/rejected, I didn’t even have to check to know my results. This was a common pattern for every single student at my high school. It was genuinely messed up and put so many students through hell. I literally cried everyday waiting. Posting this to spare students the stress of this process.
@radiant
If you are an instate student there is no more merit than the Dean scholarship. That’s it no matter the strength of the application.
@am9799 ohh I see, thanks!

Son was accepted last year on January 10th into Journalism major with 3.45 UW GPA and 1170 SAT, excellent extracurriculars.It was a long wait but he eventually got in. Other son transferred in for spring semester; much easier to transfer in and he received a decision within 2 weeks. HS senior daughter also applied this year with lower stats, 3.2 UW GPA, SAT not great either. It will be a long shot for her but we are hopeful. She will likely need to go elsewhere and transfer in for spring semester next year. Good luck to all and remember you can always transfer in after 1 or 2 semesters elsewhere if you don’t get in as a HS senior; it’s not the end of the world!
Accepted last night, College of Engineering, Honors College and Deans Award!
Where do you see honors college and scholarships?
@123hng I remember I was in the same position as you earlier this year and I was shocked when my friend got an acceptance a week before me while I had to wait longer for it and ended up being waitlisted for applying RD. My friend applied RD too but she got in. I just feel as UMass is so biased with accepting students during the RD round and they just literally take almost everything during EA. Some students had to apply RD since they get rejected or deferred from better schools that they apply EA or ED for.
The Honors college and scholarship info is at the bottom of the acceptance letter.
My son was accepted last night to the honors college.
