Alright, so i know i'm going to get a lot of flame for this but thought i'd post it anyway and see if anyone can give me some real advice.

I'm trying to transfer from my community college in MD to amherst this fall. My college stats are...well...bad. My mother past away last semester and it really took a toll on my GPA dealing with the funeral and losing her. I included this in the 'explain any extra information section' But here are the stats I have if anyone can help me just see my chances (though I'm sure they are slim, lol)

College GPA: 1.93
HS GPA: 3.4 weighted
ACT score: 28
HS president if red cross for 3 years, editor of year book for 3 years, captain of soccer team and tennis for 1 year, student body president for 1 year and vice for one year.
Current teacher is writing me a recommendation along with my HS advisor

Also, in my essay I explained that 'even though there was a death, it was my own responsibilty for doing poorly, no one elses' so i was honest.

Anyone have any idea of what they might say? or is it a hit or miss?

Well you need atleast a 2.5 to be competitive, but seeing how you are out of state, they might accept/waitlist you because they get more money from OOS.

thanks pink :)

do you think they’ll take into consideration my hs record and what my teacher says about my current work? plus i have schedule a phone talk with an admissions person, do you think that will help?

How long have you been in CC in MD? How many credits do you have so far? If you have less than 30 credits, I think they still put an emphasis at your HS record but if you have like 40-50 credits or more I don’t even think HS records even matter.

I think you have a decent chance if you can spend another semester or two then apply, but it doesn’t hurt to try. You might get in. Good Luck :)

@nicway: That question is kinda hard to answer (hence i’m meeting with an admissions person) but I’ll try and explain it to you as best as possible. I took college classes during my HS years, so ALOT of my credits are from that time. I took college classes from 10th -12th grade year, so if my calculations are correct, about 20 of my credits are from then AKA prior to HS graduation, my remaining 11 are from college years, so I have a total of 31 credits, BUT not all of those will transfer over to Umass, only about…20 or so have an equal class at umass, so at best i’d have 20 credits.

Its not like I dont have another fall back school that i’m already accepted in, Umass is just ideal So with 31 credits, do you think my HS transcript will help me?

I think your HS transcript will help you. Good luck and keep your hopes high :)

Awesome thanks a lot I shall!
